Cinderella
::
Canadian choreographer James Kudelka has a highly-deserved reputation for creating some of the most imaginative, striking and emotionally compelling versions of the classic ballet repertoire to be seen anywhere today. His ability to give a fresh, contemporary resonance to long established works through locating in them new sources of dramatic import, humour and thematic interest is second to none.
His 2004 re-imagining of Cinderella is a case in point. Without losing any of the classic story's simple fairy tale appeal, Kudelka manages to retain--and indeed enhance--both the romantic and comedic aspects
of the ballet, while at the same time finding in it something more than the conventional rags-to-riches fantasy narrative. Exploiting the complex energies of Prokofiev's score to the full, Kudelka creates out of the
original a story of individual growth and transformation through love and a fuller vision of the world and nature.
Until June 8

Sampradaya Dance Creations
:: Lata Pada and Sampradaya Dance Creations present the world premieres of shunya and
B˛ in a riveting double bill of contemporary Indian dance. Redefining Indian dance, these compelling new works challenge and contradict prevailing perceptions of the east/west matrix. shunya,
choreographed by Lata Pada is a multi-disciplinary, multi-sensory exploration of the concept of zero. Expressed through the aesthetics of several world cultures, shunya
evokes the mystery of this abstract and esoteric symbol. B˛ is a daring exploration of the confluence of bharatanatyam
and ballet choreographed by UK's avant-garde, Mavin Khoo, for Sampradaya Dance Creations and Ballet Jorgen Canada.

Luminato Festival Dance: Mark Morris Dance Group - Mozart Dances
:: Three of Mozart's works for piano and orchestra - the Concerto No. 11 in F
major, the Sonata in D major for Two Pianos, and the Concerto No. 27 in B-flat major - are the inspiration for this acclaimed evening length work by one of the world's most celebrated dance troupes. Recurring motifs
link the three pieces: "Eleven," danced mostly by the women; "Double," in which the men come to the fore; and "Twentyseven," in which all 16 performers unite in an exuberant finale.
Members of the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra, conducted by Jane Glover, and pianists Ursula Oppens and Amy Dissanayake provide the live accompaniment as the endlessly inventive patterns of Mark Morris'
choreography - by turns playful, fantastic, ritualistic, reflective and enigmatic- unfold against the bold backdrops of British abstract artist Howard Hodgkin.
June 6 - June 8
MacMillan Theatre, Faculty of Music , Edward Johnson Building , 80 Queen's Park | Tickets: $50 - $70
Luminato Festival Dance: Mark Morris Dance Group - All Fours / Violent Cavern
:: All Fours, a piece in five movements, gives visual expression to the symmetries and tensions of Bartók's String Quartet no. 4 as its 12 dancers
explore the various permutations of four-way pursuit among pairs of couples. In the ultra-high-energy Violet Cavern, 15 dancers seem to defy gravity as they leap and spin amid a spatial symphony of
suspended planes created by scenic artist Stephen Hendee. The unique score, commissioned by Morris, is composed and performed by the avant-garde jazz collective The Bad Plus - described by Rolling Stone as
"hot players with hard-rock hearts."
June 10 & 11 MacMillan Theatre, Faculty of Music , Edward Johnson Building , 80 Queen's Park | Tickets: $50 - $70
Luminato Festival Dance: Mark Morris Dance Group - Leibeslieder Waltzes / Grand Duo
::
Love can be both ardent and fleeting, both tender and violent, a source both of anguish and of solace. In Love Song Waltzes and New Love Song Waltzes, his two ravishing ballets set to Brahms'
Liebesliederwalzer, op. 52 and Neue Liebesliederwalzer, op.65, master choreographer Mark Morris examines love in all its multitudinous aspects, both intimate and social. Accompanying the Liebeslieder Waltzes'
Canadian premiere is Grand Duo, Morris' interpretation of Lou Harrison's Grand Duo for Violin and Piano, an epic spectacle ablaze with primal energy.

Luminato Festival Dance: Mark Morris Dance Group - Slow Dancing
:: They appear to be still photographs: luminous shots of dancers in mid movement, projected on three outdoor screens, each several storeys high. Alone, the unexpectedness and
monumental scale of these images would compel the eye. But keep looking, and suddenly you become aware of their breathtaking extra dimension. Hovering at the limits of human perception is the haunting beauty of a
stillness that moves. To achieve these unique studies of the human body in ultra-slow motion, artist David Michalek used a special high-definition camera running at 1,000 frames a second. Shot at such speed,
a five-second gesture expands to fill 10 minutes of screen time, opening our eyes to a strange world of almost suspended animation. Michalek's subjects, richly diverse in age, ethnicity and dance form, are
acclaimed dancers and choreographers from around the world: artists who work in styles and traditions ranging from Japanese court dance to Afro-Brazilian capoeira, from flamenco to hip-hop, from classical ballet to hoop
dancing.
