Glenn’s (aka Grand Poobah’s) opinion: This is Toronto’s best race. One of the Toronto Star’s “Ten Top Runs,” 2003. Family atmosphere. Excellent organization by the Longboat Roadrunners. Great view of the skyline. Very flat course with varied terrain. Also includes a 5K run, a 5K walk and a 1K kids fun run. Tracy G: The atmosphere of taking a ferry to where you race and the fact I was there as a kid for picnics and amusement rides makes it the best. BTW, the ferry costs $6.50 (adult) for a return trip. Jacquie’s (10K) and Anne’s (5K) first races, 2001 & 2004. The weather can be very hot. Best advice: Take the early ferries (see above).

John Bingham was the guest speaker for the 2004 and 2005 races! Toronto Penguins have volunteered as course marshalls at Bay & Wellington since 2004. Entertainment stations along the routes will keep you motivated and entertained (11 on the marathon route), as will the welcome concert at City Hall, a huge free 2-day runners expo, online training help and more. This event features a “Charity Challenge” that in 2006 raised over $700,000 for local charities.

Where the Penguin Brigade began. In 1996, a group of runners calling themselves the “Penguin Brigade” ran for the first time. Today, that group has grown to more than a thousand international members. In 2000, the Brigade celebrated its fifth anniversary by returning to Washington, D.C., and running the “Marathon of the Monuments.” Mila and Nancy’s (2002), Kathryn’s (2000) as well as Tony’s (2005) first marathon. The 2005 race will represent the tenth (!) anniversary of the Penguin Brigade.

Charlotte Penguin extraordinaire Ron Horton calls it a “26.2-mile standing ovation.” Wear something with your name on it and people will respond! Canadians can participate in the 4-mile International Fun Run the day before the race. And don’t miss the excellent pre-race pasta dinner organized by New York City Penguin Daniel Wellner. The Penguin Winter Carnival was held in February 2005 and was a fun social meeting of runners, walkers, friends and family attending the Run Tampa 2005 events. Penguins from across North America gathered in Calgary in July 2006 for the first-ever Penguin Stampede, organized by the Calgary Penguins. Grand Poobah Glenn of the Toronto Penguins was one of the attendees.
