INTERNATIONAL CULTURAL ENCOUNTER IN CUBA History, Culture and Religion in the African Diaspora An Interdisciplinary Gathering in Havana, Regla, Guanabacoa and Matanzas January 05-12, 2002

  In Cuba today believers of various religious traditions including Osha - Ifa (Lecumi, Santeria), Abakua, Palo Monte, Vodou and Arara incorporate expressions of these belief systems into everyday life, art and music.

This multi-disciplinary international encounter will provide the opportunity for scholarly exchange concerning the African Diaspora.  It will gather local and international scholars as well as community representatives.  Workshop and seminar topics will explore such areas as: History, Folklore, Medicine, Language, Archeology, Religion, and National Culture, Music, Dance and the Visual arts.  Community representatives will share their knowledge and host visits, guiding participants in an exploration of their diverse cultural heritages

SCHEDULE and ITINERARY
Day 1-2     Arrive Havana, registration, cultural-religious activity & welcome reception
Day 3-4     Work sessions and field visits Havana and Matanzas
Day 5        Work sessions and special field visit to Regla to attend "tambor bata" ceremony of 
                   the  Osha Ifa religion
Day 6        Work sessions in Havana
Day 7        Field visits in Matanzas and Jovellanos, return to Havana
Day 8        Depart Cuba

TOPICS:
The Havana area and Matanzas province have a rich grounding in Afro-Cuban art, literature, history and belief systems.  Researchers are invited to present papers on a range of topics related to the theme of History, Culture and Religion in the African Diaspora, ie:
TRAVEL PACKAGE INCLUDES:  Round trip airfare to/from Havana with departure from Toronto or Cancun, contribution to facilitate the full participation of our Cuban colleagues in all associated events and social activities, 7 nights accommodation double occupancy in air-conditioned rooms  with en-suite bath, breakfast and dinner daily, coordination of visits and exchanges, conference registration fee, translators, local facilitators,  ground transportation, Cuban visa (delegates born in Cuba must apply directly to a Cuban consular office for their visa).
 
Very Important Note    Air tickets issued with the conference travel package are based on special fares that are non-refundable and valid only for flights on the dates indicated, the organizers do not accept responsibility for missed connections due to  cancellation or delay of your connecting flight.  Provide lots of cushion when making your connecting flight arrangements
 
FEES            $1,450 USD, Single room  add $140 per week
 
FEE REDUCTIONS   
Make your own air travel arrangements, join in Havana and leave in Havana, reduce price by $350. 
Delegates choosing this option are responsible for making their own way between airport and hotel on arrival and departure.
 
Conference only, reduce price by $750.  Delegates choosing this option are responsible for arranging lodging, meals and transportation between  airports and conference venues.                     
 
Eleggua Alumni Discount: If you have traveled during the past 5 years with Eleggua Project you qualify for a $50 discount.      Simply enclose a cover note with your registration providing your dates of previous travel and the name of the event in which you participated.
 
PAYMENTS
A deposit of $500 must accompany your registration.  Registration deadline - September 30,2001.  The balance must be paid before November 15, 2001.  All payments should be sent to Eleggua Project.
