Cuba has universal health care with Cuban's enjoying a life expectancy of 76.1 years. Infant mortality is 7.2 deaths per 1,000 live births. There are 53 physicians per 1,000 population with 60 hospital beds per 1,000. Immunization coverage is 99% for DPT, BCG and measles.
This multi disciplinary international encounter will provide the opportunity for scholarly exchange concerning public health issues in Cuba. We will meet with Ministry of Public Health representatives, visit a hospital, a polyclinic, a maternity clinic, a nursing home and a medical school. In addition we will learn about scientifically based complementary alternative medicine CAM in Cuba. Universal health care systems like Cuba's lend themselves to co-operative studies allowing researchers to draw on coordinated data collected from broad patient samples. We will also participate in various social and cultural activities including visits to museums and share opportunities that will assist in learning about Cuba's history and rich cultural heritage.
