  Love and opera make the perfect pairing, In a rare appearance with Boris Brott and the NAO, superstar tenor Ermanno Mauro joins soprano Sinead Sugrue, mezzo Lauren Segal and bass Peter McGillivray to convey the triumph of passion, heartbreak of lost love, and anguish of separation through romantic selections from Leoncavallo's I Pagliacci, Saint-Saëns' Samson et Dalila and Verdi's La Traviata. $34 | $29 seniors | $10 students

  The youngest artist on the legendary Deutsche Grammophon label, pianist Jan Lisiecki displays his astonishing virtuosity in Mozart's "Elvira Madigan" Piano Concerto (No. 21 in C) and Liszt's inventive Piano Concerto No. 2 with the NAO under the baton of Maestro Brott. $32 | $27 seniors | $10 students

*Reserved Section in Hamilton only. Both concerts are dedicated to the memory of Trevor Garwood-Jones, who died in March, and is remembered for redesigning much of Hamilton in the late 20th century, including Hamilton Place.

St. John's Anglican Church, 272 Wilson Street East, Ancaster

  Famed Italian pianist Giuseppe La Licata returns to the Festival stage with a program of Italian piano gems including Rossini's Saltarello à l'Italienne, Clementi and Vivaldi sonatas and a Martucci tarantella. Thursday, July 21, 7:30 p.m. – Organ Fireworks
Centenary United Church, 24 Main Street W., Hamilton

  Saint Saens' explosive Third Symphony is the centrepiece of this program featuring the musical pyrotechnics of organist Ken Cowan. Also on the program are Gerald Bales' Variants and Joseph Jongen's Concerto for Organ. Presented in partnership with the Royal Canadian College of Organists, the concert features a full orchestra along with the Centenary's beautifully restored five-keyboard pipe organ. $30 | $25 seniors | $10 students. Saturday, July 23, 7:30 p.m. – Hou Plays Sibelius
Mohawk College McIntyre Theatre, Hamilton

  Masterful violinist Yi-Jia Susanne Hou performs the great Sibelius Violin Concerto. As well, Boris Brott conducts the NAO in Cameron Wilson's Joe Canada Overture and Shostakovich's powerfully poetic ode to rebirth, his Fifth Symphony. Dedicated to the memory of celebrated violinist Marta Hidy, who died in November 2010. $30 | $25 seniors | $10 students

Wednesday, July 27, 7:30 p.m. – Russian Romantics
Mohawk College McIntyre Theatre, Hamilton

  Pianist Sara Davis Buechner joins the NAO and Boris Brott in a program featuring two seminal works that continue to inspire modern composers, pop singers and filmmakers – Rachmaninoff's intensely melodic Piano Concerto No. 2 and Tchaikovsky's meditation on the power of Fate in life and death with his Pathétique Symphony, premiered only nine days before the composer's death. The evening pays tribute to Owen Boris, founder of Hamilton's Mountain Cablevision and a noted philanthropist, who died in April. $32 | $27 seniors | $10 students

The repertoire of the brilliantly witty Vancouver-based Joe Trio consists of the classics – from Papa Haydn to Shostakovich – new works by contemporary composers, and their own arrangements of popular, jazz and rock tunes. $40 | $35 seniors $20 students. No reserved seating.

Friday, August 5, 5 p.m. – Petruzzelli Day
Mohawk College McIntyre Theatre, Hamilton

  A cocktail reception and audio-visual presentation about the reconstruction of the famous Petruzzelli Theater in Bari, one of the most famous opera houses in Italy, built at the same time as Milan's Scala, Naples' San Carlo and Venice's Fenice. The discussion will be led by Giandomenico Vaccari and Luigi Fuilliano, superintendant and artistic secretary of the theatre. The presentation will be followed by the dress rehearsal of Carmen. $10 (including refreshments). No reserved seating.

Saturday, August 6, 7:30 p.m. - Carmen in Concert
Mohawk College McIntyre Theatre, Hamilton

  The world's most famous opera is performed in a staged concert version, with Lauren Segal as the irresistible but tempestuous title character of Bizet's Carmen, the hot-blooded Gypsy whose tumultuous relationship with Don José leads to mutiny, crime and ultimately, murder. Tenor Keith Klassen is José, with baritone Gregory Dahl as the toreador Escamillo and soprano Sinead Sugrue as Micaëla. The Arcady Singers (Ron Beckett, conductor) perform the famous choruses with the National Academy Orchestra under Boris Brott. Overseeing the production is famed Italian opera director Giandomenico Vaccari, head of the historic Petruzzelli Theatre in Bari. $40 | $35 seniors | $20 students.

Thursday, August 11, 7:30 p.m. –The Spanish Gypsy
Mohawk College McIntyre Theatre, Hamilton

  The stirring and sensual rhythms of Latin and Eastern Europe collide in this passionate performance by Juno Award-winning violinist Lara St. John, Boris Brott and the NAO. St. John performs Ravel's Tzigane, Bizet/Waxman's Carmen Fantasy Overture and Sarasate's Zigeunerweisen – all juggernauts of violin virtuosity.   Phantom of the Opera star, tenor David Rogers joins Boris Brott and the NAO for a rollicking salute to The Great White Way's great leading men. Sunday, August 14, 3 p.m. – High Tea: The Whitehern Legacy
Royal Botanical Gardens, 680 Plains Road West, Burlington

  This year, Hamilton celebrates the legendary McQuesten family, who founded the Royal Botanical Gardens and many other important parks, roads and monuments in the Golden Horseshoe and around Ontario. Jacqui Templeton Muir narrates the family saga, while pianist Valerie Tryon and soprano Janet Obermeyer perform music of the Victorian era, including works by Mendelssohn, Chaminade, Clara Schumann and others discovered at the Whitehern Museum. Thursday, August 18, 7:30 p.m. - Carmina Burana
Mohawk College McIntyre Theatre, Hamilton

  Carl Orff's Carmina Burana is one of the most widely loved choral works in history – alternating between drama, pathos, wicked humour and soul-stirring passages. Metropolitan Opera star, tenor John McMaster is joined by soprano Leslie Anne Bradley, baritone Theodore Baerg, the Arcady Singers and the massive Brott Festival Choir.  $37 | $33 seniors | $15 students
