Fall 2008 - 2009 Season Opener: Wit

:: Although the topic - cancer - is grim, Edson says that Wit is about love and knowledge, grace and redemption. She uses the word "wit" not so much to convey a sense of comedy (although there are several moments of intelligent humour) but rather to reflect the natural ability to perceive and understand. In order to convey all these concepts, Edson says, she had to write about their opposites: "So the play is about miscommunication and misunderstanding and posturing and arrogance," and while it is a play about death and dying, what seems to have impressed audiences is the lesson it presents for the living."

Sept. 26 - Oct. 11, 2008   Alumnae Theatre, 70 Berkeley St.  |   Tickets: $12 - $18     Phone: 416 364-4170 (box 1) or email reservations by

Toronto theatre - The Second City

Barack To The Future
Open-ended run

::  The Second City Toronto will debut its 62nd mainstage revue, directed by Second City veteran Bruce Pirrie – fresh from a smash hit at The Second City Las Vegas, and recent Toronto hit Facebook of Revelations.
  Barack to the Future
is an unstoppable, high-energy boost – poking fun at pop culture, politics, relationships and anything that dares take itself too seriously. Overbearing bosses, culture snobs and even the raccoons in your garbage make an appearance on stage through the hilarious character work of this extremely talented cast. Returning to the stage for Barack to the Future are Marty Adams, Darryl Hinds, Karen Parker and Leslie Seiler, joined by gifted Toronto comedy veteran Kerry Griffin and audience favourite Reid Janisse.

Opens Aug. 7   The Second City , 51 Mercer St. (next to Wayne Gretzky's)    |  Tickets: $23 - $28      Phone: 416-343-0011

Belle Moral: A Natural History

:: A spellbinding story by Ann-Marie MacDonald, one of Canada's most beloved writers.
On a foggy Scottish coast lies an ancestral home called Belle Moral. There, by day, young Pearl MacIsaac considers questions of science and nature, and by night, dreams of mythical creatures and mysterious brides. This is a house full of mystery – just who is in the attic and why does Pearl have an ear in a jar? Part magic, part philosophy and part whodunnit, the darkly comic play is also a rousing call for tolerance and diversity.
Ann-Marie MacDonald is the award-winning author of the play Goodnight Desdemona (Good Morning Juliet), and the novels The Way the Crow Flies and Fall On Your Knees . She is also an actor and broadcast journalist.

Out Of Order

::  The combination of cleverness and absolute accessibility is what has made Cooney one of the most successful and widely produced playwrights in the world. Out of Order is no exception.
A Cabinet Minister plans an illicit evening in a London hotel. The evening however comes to an abrupt halt when he and the lady involved find a body in the bedroom. If the Cabinet Minister is involved in a scandal, he knows that he would bring disgrace on the government and his marriage could fail. So he sets about trying to cover up the body and enlists the help of his secretary George Pigden.
