Raven Lake fall '02
POLICE ON RAVEN LAKE
The Ontario Provincial Police made an appearance on Raven Lake on the date of the Corn Roast. In speaking to them, they informed your Water Safety Chairman that they are now handing out $250.00 FINES for not having licences, and are also on the prowl for boats running without registration numbers ( all boats over 10 hp must be registered and show their numbers), innapropriate life jackets, missing safety equipment, etc.

ALSO, PLEASE NOTE. The police not only travel in well-marked Police Boats, they also have a tin boat with a 30 hp that is UNMARKED!!! They told me this boat likes to go out unannounced, and is used at dusk and twilight to nab boats that drive without lights!!! They have had several complaints from our lake about lightless boats at night, and told me they have added Raven Lake to their list of lakes to prowl.

So the message? LET"S NEVER SEND ANY BOAT OUT AT NIGHT WITHOUT FULL AND PROPER NAVIGATION LIGHTS ON AT ALL TIMES!!! And sorry, but a flaslight in a tin boat is NOT acceptable, especially if it is only turned on occasionally!!! FOR HEAVENS' SAKE, and the sake of other boaters and yourselves, leave your navigation lights on at all times. Sure, you can argue you can see better without them on, BUT OTHERS CANNOT SEE YOU!!! Do we have to have a repeat of the tragedy on Lake Muskoka this year, where a seasoned senior boater told the police he didn't need lights on his tiin boat because he was out so seldom at night, and even then only went a short distance accross to the landing?? HE WAS KILLED AT NIGHT ONE WEEK LATER AT NIGHT IN HIS TIN BOAT AT NIGHT RUNNING WITHOUT LIGHTS!!! Let's never have this tragedy happen here!
