The Incredibles

Elastigirl Holly Hunter

The Incredibles is an advanced technology animation that starts slowly and picks up speed as we are introduced to each of the Incredible characters. Challenges in their lives are not easily overcome and rely very little on customary superhero silliness, like death rays and badly designed robots. Well, there is a robot, but we do believe in its destructive powers. This animation is well thought out, and the characters are as challenged as every one else.

Starting with the voices, there is Craig T. Nelson (television's "Coach" and father in "Poltergeist") as the likable and powerful Mr. Incredible (Bob Parr). Holly Hunter adds a sexy lisp to the stretchable Elastigirl (Helen Parr). She never nags and her attitude is loving, caring, though perhaps too parental for the troublesome siblings. Spencer Fox voices the speedy little Dashiell "Dash" Parr, as talented as The Justice League's Flash, and Sarah Vowell is excellent as Violet Parr, who lacks a nickname for her multiple talents, from generating protective shields (much like Green Lantern) to invisibility at will. She is older than Dash, so is always given the chance to "be in charge," much to the young boy's chagrin. After all, she is on the brink of lapsing into a gawky teenage Goth. Samuel L. Jackson voices Frozone, Lucius Best, who can create his own skating rink and freeze water in mid-air. Baby "Jack-Jack" Parr appears to be the only non-super member of the family, but appearances can be deceiving. The nasty little creep, Syndrome (Buddy Pine) is voiced by Jason Lee. There has been some criticism that he is not a super-villain and has too much understandable motivation to make him truly hated or feared. But he has far more depth than those one-dimensional and predictable villains of Batman and Superman comics. As time goes by his inventiveness and frustration manifest into pure nastiness to make him truly dangerous.

In the beginning the superheroes were effective at stopping crime, but somewhat destructive. It was decided that they had better cut it out, or there would be too many law suits that government patrons must answer to. Ordered into ordinary life to become average citizens (who must hide their super powers), their lives become mundane and oppressive, especially after Bob (Mr. Incredible) eventually loses his job and doesn't tell his wife, Helen. The ordinary insurance world cohorts Bob must contend with are drawn and projected with savage wit. Bob's boss was annoyed that Bob would often show compassion and concern for his clients, and assist them in understanding their rights, all to the financial detriment of the company. It was only natural that Bob get booted out. He was too good a man to belong in the insurance game.

Pixar's "The Incredibles" is a superb technological achievement, and has the capability to produce many sequels to come, now that they have defined their lovable and sympathetic characters. It just took them a long time to do it, and perhaps the dialogue was slightly over the heads of the youngest movie goers. The laughs are not as frequent as they should be, and the writing needs to be upgraded to be more absorbing and humorous, otherwise, all the animation and background brilliance may just go to waste.

One character who stands out above all else is Edna Mode (voiced by director, Brad Bird). She outfits the family with super uniforms that conform to their super talents, something that other Comic superhero creators do not effectively account for. For example, the suit can become invisible for daughter Violet. Otherwise, we would logically expect a suit to be running around by itself (operated by the invisible girl. And Violet cannot strip down to prance about invisibly naked as the Invisible Man did, or we would have an entirely new set of problems.) The older strongly-accented, Edna is short, cute and entirely lovable. She appears to be modeled after actress Linda Hunt.
