One of the best Japanese anime cartoons is Inuyasha, which pits the troublesome half-demon against everyone else. In truth, this superbly drawn and conceived anime shows a boyish Inuyasha, who likes the wide-eyed school girl, Kagome, but most of the time he will not show it, too intent upon finding shards of the shattered Jewel of the Souls. Still, the hero needs the 15 year-old from the future. In fact, they need each other, and as their adventures progress, their feelings grow for one another.

There are others who admire the spunky girl from twentieth century Japan, during her jaunts down the well, where she is transported into feudal Japan. There is Shippo, the fox spirit, who is ever helpful, especially when he is keeping Inuyasha in line. Another member of the band of allies is Miroku, the woman-chasing monk, with the hurricane-like "Hell Hole" in his right hand, by means of which he can battle the many demons in the world. A less heroic character is Sesshoumara, full-demon brother to Inuyasha, who would like to kill his brother to capture the sword that Inuyasha has inherited from his father. As Inuyasha and Kagome, along with their friends travel through the world of demons and humans, they hunt for the missing Jewel shards. The story is complex, and the characters are delightful and endearing, their relationships growing as the series advances. One of the greatest appeals to this series, is that of the strong character development and human weaknesses of all of the characters. It is much easier to identify with a superhero who can be as foolish and stubborn as anyone we know. This parallels the American superhero Spiderman who was just an ordinary teenager (Peter Parker) who was thrust into a superhuman role by a combination of an accident (the bite from a radioactive spider), and guilt (when he failed to prevent a burglary by a man who ultimately murdered his uncle.) In this supremely excellent Japanese anime, an ordinary but pretty schoolgirl accidentally falls into the world of the legendary past where demons and half-demons reek carnage upon their land, a world of mystery, magic, and intrigue, punctuated by the budding romance of the primary characters, as their bodies and spirits develop towards adulthood.
