The iPod with the first letter not capitalized is a portable
media player devised and marketed by Apple Computer which has taken the
world by storm. They have become almost as omnipresent as the cell
phone, with their staring, zombi-eyed advocates marching dreamily along
the streets. Yes, if you speak to an iPod user, they should be able to
hear you, in spite of the glorious soundwaves pumping between their
ears. You can even catch a few lurching to the sounds, and if you were
unaware of the iPod, you might thing them as strange as cell phone
advocates with remote microphones, who appear to be talking loudly to
themselves. The massive built-in hard drive is the secret. Connected
to a computer, the mightly machine can receive hundreds of hours of
music and video downloads. In 2005, three models, the iPod nano with a
color screen, the iPod shuffle and the video player were released. Many
more discontinued models are still kicking around the second-hand
market, with advocates always dreaming of what the next generation
mechanical marvel can contribute to their entertainment tastes as well
as their personal status. Pity be to the poor unfortunate who continues
to subsist in the dark ages with a primitive early model -- but watch
out! Years from now, those early undamaged, mint-condition models that
have not be cast away or given to the dog to chew on, will come back
with a vengeance as endearing antiques, so be sure to keep them and add
them to the property contents of your will to bequeath to your heirs.
As expected, being the best-selling digital audio player, the iPod has
been at the center of a growing number of design criticisms and legal
battles. Don't be surprised when it is added to the list of brooding
health fanatics who will find something to complain about, be it eardrum
eroding or mental wavelength disturbances.
