Hip hop exploded onto the Houston Texas scene with the emergence of
underground rap artist, Lil Flip, born Wesley Weston, in South
Houston, Texas, in the Cloverland community. He arrived on the rapper
stage in year 1998. His nickname came from his habit of "flipping
styles." Appearing first on mix tapes with legendary producer DJ Screw,
who honored him with the title "freestyle king" for his non-stop
impromptu rhyming, he later teamed up with a local concert promoter,
Duane Hobbs ("Humpty Hump"), his manager, to create the Suckafree
Records label. Their first project was "Hustlaz Stackin' Endz" (1998),
featuring crew men A.P. and Redd.
This was followed two years later by his independent debut album, The
Leprechaun, that became a Texas hit, on the basis of cut, "I Can Do
Dat". All the success came initially on underground radio, but soon his
reputation spread, after which their was a bidding war for the rookie
rapper. He signed with Columbia Records in 2002 and Suckafree was given
a distribution deal as part of the contract. As his reputation spread
with gigs farther afield in Cleveland and Detroit, he came home only to
be united with a bullet in a drive-by in Houston, just before the
release of Undaground Legend, an effort destined to become platinum. He
walked from the hospital the next day, and UL broke the million selling
mark, hitting #12 on the Billboard 200, and striking #5 on the Hip Hop
R&B chart. To maintain the momentum he assisted David Banner's
Mississippi album to success on the single, "Like a Pimp," and added his
special style to Fam-Lay's "Rock and Roll (remix)." His stylishness
caught the eye of gamesters, and his "I'm the Greatest Player," carroms
out from Playstation 2 game, "NBA Live 2004." Flip is here, and not
even lead shot can smackdown his effortless hustle.
