Man's ideas through the ages are best expressed through rare
books. Nothing is more attractive or elegant. Approximately the
year 1455, Johannes
Gutenberg printed the first bible, which was followed soon afterward by
many a printed text. Here is your chance to acquire creative and
imaginative thoughts from ancient and modern scholars on live auctions,
and in many cases to find a working value of old rare books or
even a book in manuscript form.
Sometimes a rare book is prized because of the low number of copies
produced like The Darkling, pictured above, but
generally it is the first edition that will attract the collector and
influence rare book values. From time to time pages from medieval
illuminated manuscripts appear. Condition is critical to both the rare
book and the first edition, so don't pay too much if you think the book
has not been well kept. Your first step is to register. Registration is
fast and free. Afterwards, to stay abreast of the latest auctions,
bookmark this page and come back often as new listings are added daily.
This is the gateway to expanding your collection. Look here often to
find special sales for old comic books, even old high school year books,
but more common are the rare children's books and rare science fiction
books. There will be specialty categories from time to time, so you will
have to be vigilant. These can include rare occult books and rare
military books. The field is endless and can be as exciting as a garage
sale, as you never know what will turn up. Sometimes you will find links
to creative writing, manuscript editing, services such as typing
manuscripts, even manuscript guidelines to the manuscript format, though
you should check your local bookstore or library for The Writer's
Market if you are serious about creating and marketing your own
works. Many writing magazines will have links to grant writing, the
latest writing contest, various writing jobs, help on writing a resume,
along with resume writing examples (and if you're lucky, resume writing
free). Don't expect to find the Kelly Blue Book value (Kelley Blue
book), but there will be commercial associations such as Borders books,
Amazon books (a great place to look for out-of-print books, used books,
and book summaries or book reviews volunteered by readers), as well as
the latest Harry Potter book. There are separate categories for gothic
literature, childrens literature, African American literature, classic
literature, English literature (British literature), though by far
children's literature dominates as it is sought after by young people,
their parents, and educators. Obscure associations may link you to
Japanese writing (the literature as well as the language characters),
Chinese writing, local manuscripts typing service (if you're lucky),
rich writing contests (though those that are lean in valuable prizes can
at least ensure a headstart with your first publishing opportunity),
online literature library, literature review, literature study guides
(the students' favorite), literature circles (find yourself a chat
mate), literature lesson plans (for the busy teacher) and modernism in
literature.
Sometimes modern books that are hard-to-come by, especially if out of print
will qualify as rare including earlier editions of guide books and self-help
books like Samuel Blankson books.
