Abstract:
In this paper we briefly introduce a mathematical model of Indian music. We then discuss
several mathematical properties of the murchana process [i.e., the process of deriving
scales from a parent scale] that arise from this model, as well as methods for the
computation of murchanas of rags [melodic modes]. Finally, we end the paper by
illustrating some of the mathematical properties of Rag Malkauns from the point of view of
murchanas.
