Bhimsen Joshi Icon of Indian music and one of the top vocalists in India and certainly the ace performer of his Kirana gharana. Disciple of Sawai Gandharva who was disciple of the gharana founder Ustad Abdul Karim Khan. His music is widely available on LPs, tapes and CDs.
Gangubai Hangal Icon of Indian music and grande dame of Kirana gharana. Hers is a forceful style executed in a bold 'masculine' manner, but retaining the serene musicality of the Kirana idiom. Well in her 80s, Gangubai can still be heard on the concert stage. Her recorded music is still available on tape and CD.
Rashid Khan Sahaswan Gharana. Great grandson of Inayat Hussain Khan, founder of the gharana, and grandson of Nissar Hussain Khan. Has been singing since he was a child.

Nissar Hussein Khan Icon of Indian music. Sahaswan Gharana. With his death in the 80s India lost an authentic 'gharanedar' artist and master of khayal and especially tarana. Few recordings still available.
Saratchandra Arolkar Icon of Indian music and a doyen of the Gwalior Gharana. Disciple of Pt. Krishnarao Shankar Pandit and the latters uncle Eknath Pandit. Masterful rendering of khayal, tappa and thumri. Leaves behind many ardent disciples. His recorded music is not easily available.
Moghubai Kurdikar Icon of Indian music and doyenne of the Jaipur (Alladiya) gayaki. A living legend now in her 90s. Mother of Kishori Amonkar and guru of many fine artists. One LP made of her music. Unavailable.
Nvrittibuwa Sarnaik brilliant and vigorous vocalist of the Jaipur (Alladiya) gayaki. Guru of Vijaya Jadhav. Very little music available.

Latafat Hussein Khan a scion of the Agra-Atrauli Gharana. Disciple of his brother Khadim Hussein Khan and later Ustads Faiyaz Khan (whom he emulated above all others) and Vilayet Hussein Khan. Limited recordings and availability.
Khadim Hussein Khan represents the true and ideal confluence of the Agra/Atrauli gayaki. Learned from the very great of his gharana. Exponent of khayal and dhrupad with a penchant for what are considered today the rarest of ragas. No music available commercially.
