Jim Kippen is an associate professor of music (ethnomusicology) in the Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto. He attained his honours degree in music from the University of York (U.K.) in 1978 where he specialized in piano, composition, and conducting, and his Ph.D. in social anthropology/ ethnomusicology from Queen's University, Belfast in 1985. Several years of fieldwork in North India led to the publication of his book The Tabla of Lucknow: A Cultural Analysis of a Musical Tradition (Cambridge University Press, 1988), and he continues to specialize in the theory and performance of North Indian classical music and in particular its virtuosic drumming traditions. In recent years he has helped to develop systems for the computer-aided analysis of Indian music. His other publications include many contributions to journals in the fields of ethnomusicology, anthropology, psychology, and computer science. |
