First-time Toronto Penguin award winners Helen and Kathryn!Today could not have been any nicer for the 8K Fall Classic at Heart Lake. I LOVE trail running. Grass, beach, pine needles, mud and many, many hills. The air was fresh, the winds calm and the skies blue.
Headed up to Brampton bright and early with Kelly and new Penguin Maureen. Had lots of time to register and hang out.
The race started at 9:30 and I would guess there were maybe 200 runners. Took me a few minutes to realize the footing is not pavement and therefore I needed to slow down a bit.
But, what a blast! I really enjoyed the up and down and different terrains.
Long and short, I was pretty happy that we hung around for the awards ceremony as I placed 3rd in my age group. Got a medal and a water bottle. YIPPEEEE!!!!!!
After the ceremony Kelly, Kathryn, Maureen and her sister Anne and I headed for Casey's for a well deserved lunch. We had a great time and I think we are all hoping that Maureen and Anne run with us in the future.
So, that's the tale of the first "hardware earner"..... we are still waiting for the other one to post!
Smiling ear to ear!
Helen

Hikerwanda wins Hardware!
Yes, age DOES have its advantages. Third place. A medal..Who would believe?
I thought I would push it today and ended up hacking and heavy huffing/puffing. My dear running buddy Kelly assessed the situation, turned my bad attitude around and helped me keep a steady pace. She led me to the finish line. Thank you, thank you friend.
Total surprise when they called out my name. Felt sort of embarrassing actually. I'm not good at getting awards.
The day was absolutely glorious, mild and sunny with fall colours. Heart Lake is a lovely, various conservation area. The Running Room with the help of a myriad of YMCA volunteers put on a great race with great support and very nice goodies...really like those juice boxes and bagels at the end.
Lunch with Kelly and Helen, along with new Penguin Maureen (Hi Maureen!) and her really neat sister, Anna, made for wonderful fellowship.
Would you believe it is 1 hour and 3 minutes from my house to Heart Lake if I go 120K on the QEW and the stress-free 407? Of course that is on a Sunday.
Kelly and I and Maureen are going to do a long run in Toronto (can you come Jacquie?) next Saturday. This will be the last push before IOWA for three of us.
Thank you dear Toronto Penguins for all your support. I so appreciate knowing each of you.
Flipper hugs,
Kathryn
