Race report from Deb in Buffalo...
Date: Mon Jun 7, 2004
Subject: Mississauga Bread and Honey 15k report

It would have been so tempting to roll over and go back to sleep this morning.  I had been in a deep sleep for most of the night, but as groggy as I was, Bry and I got dressed for the run and went out the door.

The weather was overcast and HUMID!!!  At least it wasn't sunny and humid, although the sun did come out to play later in the day, after the race thankfully.  This was the first time that I had ever raced the Bread and Honey 15k, so I had no idea what the waterstops would bring.  My Fuel Belt was loaded with two 7-oz. containers of eLoad, just to err on the safe side.  Humidity and I do NOT get along, even on the best of days, so I knew that some sort of sports drink would be a must.  Was I in for a surprise!  The Credit Valley Marathon Club runs a very good race...WITH gatorade, mixed to the proper proportion, at the waterstops!  It wasn't watered down like so many races, and it didn't taste like chlorine, like at the Mississauga Marathon.  It was "just right" and cold to boot.  This was a good thing, as my sweat level quickly achieved "drip" level on this humid day, turning me, mile by mile, into a human salt lick!

The first 5k left me wondering why I was doing this race, as the course was hilly.  Hills?!  Where did these hills come from?!  You'd think that I had never run in Mississauga before.  I pulled it together after the 8k point.  By the 10k marker, I was joking with other runners, and offered to sing a rendition of "99 bottles of beer" for someone whose mp3 player had just died.  At least it got her to smile.  I finished the last 5k with a smile, sharing Sharkies along the way.

Kudos to the Mississauga Fire Department.  They were out there IN FULL GEAR, running the 15k as a fundraiser!  Wow!!!  The last few I passed around 9k were looking a little peaked, and one said that he had been drinking only water at the stops.  Time to belly up to the gatorade table, boys....those electrolytes are a must!

I wasn't expecting great things from this run, but I finished in a gun time of 1:33:01, and a watch time of 1:32:30.  My best previous 15k was 1:34:46 chip time, so needless to say, I am pleased.  Streetsville is a nice little town too...after the post-race festivities, Bry and I wandered around, had a soy latte, shopped at The Long Run (nice selection of running gear there!), and had a sandwich at this little Mediterranean restaurant.  It was so good!
