Aug 29/01 — Carlene: Family obligations
Last week was a tough week for me in the health/ running sense. My husband was sick all week with some sort of flu (migraines, nausea, etc.) and many of my co-workers were ill as well. Obviously something was going around. Tuesday I set out for my LSD run with high hopes but quickly realized it was not going to be my day. My stomach was bloated (and a bathroom pit stop didn't help), my ITB was screaming at me, my shoulders were aching, it was hot with 78% humidity and I was dying. I cut the run short and felt miserable all night.
Although I know "Doing nothing stupid" aka DNS was the right thing to do, quitting without feeling guilty about it is hard. Today I still feel insecure - almost like a faker who has finally been revealed for the talentless runner I am. Hopefully this week's LSD run will go better and I can lay those demons to rest with some more positive energy instead.
Over the weekend I traveled to Hamilton, Ontario, for the wedding of my husband's cousin. On the way to our hotel I recognized part of the Around the Bay 30K course. In my mind's eye I saw the person in the grim reaper costume holding a sign saying "The End is Near" and it was quite thrilling.
Although I had hoped to get in a run with the Toronto Penguins on this trip, the family obligations made the whole thing impossible. I was doubly glad I had not committed to run with them when my latest niece arrived Saturday. On Sunday I missed my solo run but I got a chance to hold my niece, soak in her beauty and visit with my family. It was a worthwhile trade and a weekend to remember.
