This has been a difficult week. It's the second week of my triathlon training plan, and even though it's the "Base" training, I'm finding it hard to make all the scheduled workouts. This is particularly true of the bike, which comes out to about half the weekly training time -- given that you spend about 50% of the
elapsed time of your triathlon on the bike, versus 33% running and 17% on the swim. Coming from several months of running only, I'm still adjusting to fitting in bike and swim workouts. This week swimming got the short shift; last week it was the bike. I finally decided by the end of the week to scale the workouts back by about one hour per week. However, I'm still at the minimum beginner half Ironman workout time according to the plan. Also, as bad dreadmills are to run on, bike trainers are worse. Particularly in my cave-like basement. B-O-R-I-N-G. Music didn't seem to help, nor did dragging down a TV to watch a video. Monday though I discovered that if I jerry-rigged my Nordic Trak bookstand to the handlebars (bungee cords were involved), I could read while pedaling. That seemed to make all the difference. Guess my mind needs to be occupied with something other than looking at the ceiling and floor tiles. So Tuesday I ordered a book stand especially made for handlebars. And praying for Spring when I can get outside again.
Of course, it didn't help this week that I had a family "issue" Wednesday night that precluded me from getting a run in. Too much stress and I needed to come home and make some phone calls and get some fellow-divorced-person's advice. Luckily, the problem seemed to resolve by the weekend, so I was able to get
back on track.Sunday I did my first interval workout, as part of my long run. Just 10 minutes, with an interval of 2 minutes at a heart rate of 171-177, then a recovery down to a HR of 130. Of course I only got about three in, but it was a start. It took a lot out of me to do intervals at the same time as a long run, but because of my strange schedule this week I really didn't have any choice. Sunday afternoon I came home and slept for 2 hours.
Coming up: Week 3 of the training plan, and my first race of the season (not counting Disney) on March 9: The Gate River Run 15K in Jacksonville, Florida. My old hometown.
