New Year Resolutions

The past few weeks have been filled with travel, family visits, eating too much and running too little.  When you add to that a persistent head cold and my knee injury, well, my training has been pathetic.  However, that is the past and it cannot be changed.

Since I am still recovering from my knee injury I knew that perhaps some of this year's racing goals might need to be reconsidered.  I met with my coach and found out I was correct.  The first to go was my 10K in January which I was convinced to scale back to a 5K.  Next to go was the Around the Bay 30K I was hoping to do in March.  I am just not up to the level of running I was doing last year and there is no way I can safely be ready for that race in time, particularly since I am still coming back from the knee injury.  So... that race will have to wait till next year.

With two of my goal races nixed right off the bat I was starting to get depressed.  In October I had ran 2:10 for a half marathon and so I was wondering if shooting for a sub-2 hour time was a good idea.  My coach is supporting this goal and has encouraged me to train for this.  If possible I will try for this at KD Mini in April (assuming I can get travel plans, vacation days, etc).  Otherwise I'll aim for this at PWC4.  Either way, that is my primary goal this spring.

Moving into the summer I will return to the multisport arena and try to better my performance at some of the duathlons I ran (to finish) last year.  I am also hoping to add my first triathlon and a new duathlon that has been added to the race scene that is particularly hilly and will be very challenging.  This year will be a good year to increase my biking skills and add more structured bike training (hill and interval workouts) to the mix.  With some work I am sure I can really improve this part of my races.

If I survive all that and still have energy I will consider some 5K and 10K racing for the fall.  First I need to get that far injury free.  I really hope to be so lucky.

Since I started my weightloss journey I have lost a bit more than 75 pounds.  Last year was my first full year of just maintaining my weight and I found my weight bounced between 155 and 161.  I also found I felt much more comfortable at 155 but could never manage to stay there.  I ended the year weighing 159 pounds, 0.5 pounds more than when the year started.  My weightloss maintenance was a success.  In 2002 I have resolved to lose those extra few pounds (plus the Christmas pounds that have snuck on since my last offical weigh in) and try to maintain an overall weight of 155 pounds.  That will probably be the hardest part of the whole year.  However, I really want this to happen this year.

So... that's my plan at the moment.  It isn't really glamorous but it will keep me busy for most of the year.

Flipper hugs
