As I write this in 1999, the perception and use of laptops have come
a long way. The first laptop computers were limited use devices (Epson
and Tandy Model 100) which could not duplicate the functionality
of a desk computer. Today, there is no doubt that most information
workers could use either a desk computer or laptop computer interchangeably.
The only reason left to use a traditional desk computer is a cost
differential which is usually in the range of less than 2:1. As
flat panel displays drop in price and become more popular in use with
desk computers, even the cost differential will be reduced. The old
arguments of "desk v. laptop" computers has moved on downward to
"desk or laptop v. handheld" computers.
