autism
Though
a fortuitous set of apparent coincidences, I discovered in 1998 that I
am on the autism spectrum.
More specifically, I have
Asperger’s Syndrome (or
maybe Asperger’s Syndrome has me; I’m
not sure which). I was formally diagnosed in 2002. I haven't
yet fully come to
terms with my own autism or my
place in the autistic community. I try to be patient as I pass through the earliest stages
of what promises to be a
lifelong
journey. So far, knowing that I am autistic—or
"Aspie" or "Aspergian"; I'm still not sure which form of
self-identification appeals to me most—has
helped me contextualize and understand my personal history.
This section of the web site and my overall thoughts on the topic are
under construction, so please consider what is offered here in that
light. I don't pretend to be an authority on anything
but my own experience. Those looking for resources on autism are
hereby directed to their favourite search engine, but if you're really
desperate
to see something that I implicitly sanction, I offer several autism-related links
elsewhere on this site.
I am available for speaking engagements in Toronto (and beyond, if your organization can reimburse the cost of bus or train travel).
Presentations typically consist of readings from my memoir. In addition, time permitting I often touch on topics such as those listed below:
- Autism: Medical Condition or Spiritual Journey?
- Storytelling as a Transformative Tool
- Memoir vs. Autobiographical Fiction
- Writing, Rewriting, and Editing
