Your name should represent who you are as a person now, or perhaps the kind of person you are striving to be, or traits you have, or are striving to have. Many Witches names fall into categories such as animals, flowers, trees, colours, gem stones, the elements, stars, the sun, the moon, weather, symbols such as Onyx. Perhaps a Witch has always had a strong connection with Weeping Willow trees, Willow would be a nice name for them. You may want to name yourself after a particular animal because of it's behaviour, symbolism and habits. Perhaps you are very courageous, maybe Lion would be a good name for you. You don't have to choose a single name. It can be as long as you want. Let's say that courageous person who named themselves Lion, is very drawn to the Moon. They could call themselves Lion Moon, or Moon Lion. Let's go a step further and say that this person loves the colour (that's not a spelling mistake. It's how Canadians spell color), silver. You guessed it! They could call themselves Lion SilverMoon.

While some choose to use the name of a deity, I don't feel it's right to compare yourself to one. You may feel differently. The name you choose should only be known by your coven mates (if you're in a coven), and the deities you worship and work with on a magickal level, no one else! So don't pick a name just because it sounds cool, so you can impress your friends by it.

It's a deeply personal name, that is not meant for any other purpose than for the deities and other worldly entities to know you by. If you didn't know this, and are using your internet handle as your magickal name, you have 2 choices.

1 - Keep it as your internet handle, and choose a different one for the Gods.
2 - If you feel your internet name is an accurate representation of you that you want to keep, change your internet handle, and use the old handle as your secret magickal name. Just don't tell anyone.

Keep in mind that if you feel you've grown out of your magickal name, you are free to change it as many times as you wish. This is not uncommon, as we age and learn more about ourselves, and the path we choose to follow. Many Witches like to choose their name based on the number system (explained in my  Magical Names & Numerology page). I tried to do it, but, personally, I found it to be too constricting. I want to name myself whatever I want, whether it fits with my magickal number or not. Always do what feels right to you.

Choosing a magickal name can be difficult for some, and easy for others. If you are having a really hard time, try searching the internet for names of the examples I gave in the beginning, animals, gemstones, colours, birds, insects, the weather and colours  The skys the limit when it comes to choosing your magickal name, so have fun with it. If you start to get frustrated, it's time to take a break, and come back to it when you're in a better frame of mind.
