Miscellaneous Comments & Questions On Dali
A common request is for the value of a particular work. These kinds of requests I cannot answer. You must check with a local reputable dealer or art gallery in your area to get an honest appraisal of any of Dali works.
Another common request is one that requires an immediate response but due to the numerous pages I have, that is more often than not rarely possible. To those people my sincere apologies. I may not be able to answer most emails right away but all of them will eventually be answered.

Question by Abby from ???: "I have a signed lithographic print entitled "The Three Graces of Hawaii" by Salvador Dali. I am looking for any information I can regarding this beautiful piece of art. In particular I am seeking authentication, history, and value of this artwork. Furthermore, the origional purchase was through the Center Art Galleries of Hawaii in 1983 prior to the questionable operation of the gallery. This particular piece was part of a series entitled "Golden People". I would be grateful for any sources of exploratory information anyone has regarding the "The Three Graces of Hawaii", and Salvador Dali's interest or solicitation create this symbolic painting."
Omega: If anyone can help Abby with any information on this work, please E-Mail me.
Omega: I would like to thank aschue1 from ??? for sending in the following information to help out Abby:
"The Three Graces of Hawaii was done in 1979 and published by Levine and Levine. I have been told to only purchase prints authenticated by Albert Field...they also do appraisels. So I would recommend getting them authenticated by him. I am planning to get some Dali lithographs that I have, authenticated by him as well. Good Luck,"

El Cid - Spanish Immortals

Question by D. from ???, U.S.A.: "I would like some information about a so called Original Etching sold and authenticated by The Collectors Guild, 185 Madison Ave NY. A friend of mine has a notarized and verified original etching from the El Cid series. Is it valuable? There is no number on it but you can see the crease where it was held in some sort of holder/frame. It doesn't look like a lithograph to me. It bears the seal of the Societe de Verification de la Nouvelle Gravure Internationale of N.Y and Paris - whatever that is"
Omega: I would like to thank glmatt from ??? for prividing the information below to help out D.:
"I've got one of these, too, in the original frame, with all the "authentication" intact. The series was called "Spanish Immortals," not El Cid. El Cid is apparently the title of one of the etchings in this series. Mine is called EL CID, and it is definitely an etching. The signature is in the upper left corner. There is, however, no date that I can find either in the etching itself or in the authentication that was pasted onto the cardboard-type backing (along with instructions on how to hang the picture). The frame is silver metal and is quite good quality, but the matting is probably not acid free and is causing the paper to begin to fox (this could indicate a fly-by-night publisher, or it could indicate age). I've never heard of any of the authentication stuff, but it sounds pretty bogus (The Society... was created by the Collectors Guild, Ltd., which was also selling the etchings, probably by mail order). In any event, I'm glad I have it. Hope this helps."
Question by JD from ???: "Could you please view the photos attached and tell me if this is actually a original? I recently purchased it from an estate auction for a very prominent Southern Florida Dentist who recently passed away. Thank you for your time,"
Omega: The above from glmatt should help you."

Question by Phyllis from Redding, California, U.S.A.: "...I wonder if you can tell me about a piece of Dali's work which has recently been offered for sale to me. It is a small (appox. 8" by 10") pen and ink of a knight on horseback. The knight holds a large shield decorated with a cross. Dali's signature is prominent in the upper left hand corner. I wonder about its age and (ballpark) value..."
Omega: I would like to thank glmatt from ??? for pointing out that the work that Phyllis is describing is called "El Cid". See the question and answer above this by D. for more information on this work.
Omega: I would like to thank Craig Heard from New Jersey, U.S.A. for sending in the following information to help out Phyllis:
"I just saw this print in Pittsburgh (etching) represented as original works one of 100 etched and signed. It is listed in the Dali catalogue of works. They had it listed at $1,300 on sale for $400 in frame..."

Question by Jane from ???: "Can you tell me the opening hours for the Musea Dali at Christmas -- we're planning to be in Barcelona approx. December 21-24 and would like to schedule a trip to Figueras. Thank you."
Omega: If anyone can help Jane out please E-Mail me.

Question by Roxanna from Kiev, Ukraine: "I hope you'll be able to help me. In this e-mail I send you the thumbnails for the pictures of Salvador Dali, the names for which I don't know..."

Comments by Jay Bruneau from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada: "I was surfing through Dali sites as parts of my research when I stumbled upon your Winnipeg page. I too am from Winnipeg and I also go to the U of M. Im in my first year of Arts and am doing an essay on Dali's religious works. I am appalled at the lack of analyses or even general description of Dali's religious works not only on the Web but also in books. The amount of research material available in Winnipeg on Dali is horrible. The major libraries have little and what they have is either lost or perpetually on loan; and the bookstore cannot even order either Secret Life or Diary Of A genius. Its Feb 5 as I write and my essay is due tommorrow. If I would have discovered your sight earlier perhaps I could have requested some help but...As it stands I believe I have enough to pull it off..."

Question by Josefin Andersson from Sweden: "Dear Omega, I would be really happy if you could help me find a poem that is supposed to belong to the picture "Metamorphasis on Narcissuss". If not, please let me know where I could find more information about the poem and the painting. Many thanks."
Omega: Dali did write a poem in 1937 called "Metamorphosis Of Narcissus".
Narcissus, in his immobility, absorbed by his reflection with the digestive slowness of carnivorous plants, becomes invisible.

There remains of him only
the hallucinatingly white oval of his head,
his head again more tender,
his head, chrysalis of hidden biological designs,
his head held up by the tips of the water's fingers,
at the tips of the fingers
of the insensate hand,
of the terrible hand,
of the excrement-eating hand,
of the mortal hand
of his own reflection.

When that head slits
when that head splits
when that head bursts,
it will be the flower,
the new Narcissus,
Gala=
my narcissus

Question from Magda from ???: "Hello!! I was wondering if you had ANY idea of where I could purchase a Salvador Dali t-shirt?? I have only seen one ( I was also in Mexico-- ) but someone was wearing one.. which shows they are out there..."
Omega: They are out there as I own a few. Here in Toronto you can find them every now and then in specialty T-Shirt stores, so I assume most large cities it will be the same. Also art galeries/museums that show Dali works sometimes carry Dali t-shirts. I have not found any online sites where you can order them.

Question from Vanessa from ???: "I have been looking for a painting someone told me about all I know is that it has butterflies if you know the name of this or know where I can find..."

Omega: I know of three paintings that have butterflies in it and there probably are others. One of them, at left, is called "Tres Picos" (1955) and is a watercolor and ink conversion of print 10 3/4 by 7 1/4 inches and it is part of the collection of Mr. and Mrs. A. Reynolds Morse on loan to Savador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida, U.S.A. At right is another one that is called "Landscape With Cavalier And Gala" (1951) of mixed techniquw and measures 21 1/2 by 31 inches and is in a private collection. It is signed "Dali 1951" in a cartouche at the bottom center. The left bottom one is the third one which is called "Fancy Costumes" (1956) and is also of mixed technique and measures 12 1/2 by 9 3/4 inches. It also is in a private collection.

Question from Jeanne from Seattle, Washington, U.S.A.: "...In 1982 I purchased three Dali hand colored etchings. They are from the Twelve Tribes of Israel series (Twelve Tribes XXIII-XXXIV); I have the Frontispiece, Ruben and Iscatar. I purchased them from the City Gallery at the St. Francis in San Francisco. I am interested in selling these etchings but would like more information about the series, how to get them evaluated and where to sell them."
Omega: I could not find much on this series. I did come across the graphics on the left and right which are from a series of coins made in Israel using Dali's "Twelve Tribes" etchings. The left one is from the 11th in the series, "The Tribe of Asher" and the one on the right is the 12th, "The Tribe of Simeon". As for the color etchings themselves the only information I could find was that Dali made them in 1972. The complete series comprising thirteen drypoint etchings with color stencil printed on Rives BFK paper, each signed in pencil and numbered (total edition is 460), also signed and numbered on justification page, including title page, published by Transworld Art, New York, printed by Ateliers Rigal, with full margins. Each sheet is 652.0 x 502.5 mm. In 1997 they were asking at auction between $8,000.00 to $10,000.00 in United States dollars. This quote is for information only and not an opinion on their actual value. You should always check with your local art galleries for a more educated and responsible evaluation on the etchings.

"I am 16 and i absolutely adore paintings, but without any money, and also living in a not culture city i havn't been able to see much art yet alone get any. Your page has the greatest painting I have ever seen, i have just about downloaded all of them and printed them out..." ...Comments by Mark from ???.

Question from Adam from ???: "...I recently bought at auction a Dali Etching entitled "Cervantes". I understand that it is from his Spanish Immortals series. When was the series done? How many were in the series and how many were produced? The etching I have is authenticated by the Societe de Verification de la Nouvelle Gravure Internationale of New York and Paris. This is signed in the plate but there is no number. Can you give me any more info on this work and an approximate value?..."
Omega: I would like to thank David from ??? for providing the following information to answer Adam's above question:
"I (too) have a Dali lithograph entitled "Cervantes" with the Collectors Guild seal on the back. I've checked around the web and emailed whomever I could to find out more about it. I recently received the following info from Mr. Albert Field at the Dali Archives.
Collectors Guild made two editions, both legal. The first was pencil signed by Dali. Then he scratched his name in the plate and hundreds more were made, without signature. If yours has no signature UNDER THE PRINT it is from the second edition and sold at the time it was issued for $30-60. The first edition was l965. They began selling the second edition either that year or a few years later and kept selling it for as long as people would buy it. I can't guess how long that was.
Albert Field"
Omega: I would like to thank Jerry from ??? for providing the following information to answer Adam's above question:
"Hello,...I have a little bit of information in regards to Adam's question on the Societe de Verification de la Nouvelle Gravure Internationale. If one can find at (probibly) a second hand bookstore, a copy of a book on Dali's history and retrospective (I unfortunately do not know the exact title) printed in the mid 1970's, there is detailed list of all of his early series. I have an engraving of Portrait of Velazquez with the same verification and notary stamp which I finally found in a book at a second hand bookstore. I didn't buy the book because I found the info that I needed and didn't realize that other people were having the same problem. (my engraving is from the Spanish conqistators seris from June, 1919 and is signed in the plate). I know this isn't much to go on, but perhaps it is a start to know that there is information out there. I too am always looking for information in regards to "Velazquez" and another Dali that I have, "the Battle of Tetuan" marked (roman numeral 1) then 267/275 and signed (in pencil) on the right. I belive it to be a stone lithograph and it does have the pale blue arm holding a sword in the margin at the middle. Thanks for your time and if I find any more information, I'll be happy to pass it along...jerry"

Question from Abby Bergman from ???: "I recently purchased a signed litho by Dali-- one of his "Signs of the Zodiac". I imagine that they were a common series...Do you know anything about the series, e.g. when was it executed, the number of prints in the series, etc..."
Omega: It maybe a common series but I could not find any info on it. If anyone out there has any information to help out Abby, please E-Mail me.

Question from Dan Hardisky from ???: "Have you seen a copy of Dali's "Inferno" (1962). It was just released in October 1997, having been kept in storage by The Blue Army of Our Lady of Fatima in Washington NJ. I have a copy 8x10 of it, but would like to get a ".jpg" of it. I guess I'll have to scan this one."
Omega: I had seen it as one of Dali's tarot cards, the Magician. At left is a scan of Inferno. The Tarot cards have been available for awhile.

Question from Larry from Canada: "...I have a question regarding "The Cosmic Athlete" by Dali. I was wondering if you know where the painting resides, and if you know of any reproductions of it that can be obtained..."
Omega: All I could find on "The Cosmic Athlete" was the scan. If anyone out there has any information to help out Larry, please E-Mail me.
Update by Martin from Berne, Switzerland: "Dear Larry, The painting "The Cosmic Athlete" (1960) by Salvador Dali resides in Spain: Palacio de la Zarzuela (Patrimoni Nacional Espanyol), Madrid. Please note that I found this information in a book written not in Spanish but in Catalan: "400 obres de Salvador Dali de 1914 a 1983"; Generalitat de Catalunya / Ministerio de Cultura; page 222, No. 386. This book is an exhibition catalog. (That's why the spelling is somewhat different that correct Spanish spelling...) I do not know whether this painting is accessible for the public in Madrid, neither do I know if there are any notable reproductions available. I possess one small card with a reproduction of this painting; this card was printed in Switzerland."

Sigmund Freud
Question from Laurens from Belgium: "I would like to know the links between Salvador Dali and Sigmund Freud. I would also like to know whether Freud has had some influence on Dali his way of working."
Omega: Dali was introduced to Freud by Stefan Zweig. Dali met Sigmund Freud a few days after arriving in London on July 19, 1938 which was the only time they met. Dali compared Freud's skull to a Burgundian snail. After meeting Dali, Freud no longer thought of the surrealists as "total madmen". Dali credited Freud for being able to appreciate Wagner as he wrote in 1939, "So that, if, on the one hand, I exalt and I bring the genius of Wagner up to date again, on the other hand, I believe in paying homage to Freud who made it possible for me to SEE Wagner". Freud's influence on Dali ended there I believe. Dali painted a few portraits of Freud:
Portrait Of Freud (1937) India ink and gouache on gray background, 13 3/4 x 9 7/8" which was made before his encounter with Freud
Portrait Of Freud (1938) India ink on white blotting paper, 24 x 18 7/8" it resides in a private collection
Portrait Of Freud (1938) India ink on blotting paper 10 5/8 x 9 1/16" it resides in a private collection and was done in Freud's presence at the July meeting
Portrait Of Freud (1938) Ink on paper, 11 5/8 x 10 7/16" it resided in the former collection of Edward James Foundation, West Dean, Great Britain.
Question from Disco5840 from ???: "I'm helping my daughter... Forgive my ignorance, but who was Freud? what was the relantionship between Freud and Dali? Please give me some information... Thanks"
Omega: Freud was a famous psychiatrist and some would call him the father of this field. See above for more detail.

Question from ??? from ???: "hi!! i'd like to know more about a "lincoln in dalivision" (bronze) where would i begin to look for one? what would a reasonable price be? thanks for your time....by the way,"
Omega: I could not find any information on a bronze version but I did come across a platinum bas relief of the Lincoln In Dalivision painting. The platinum version is referred to as the deluxe edition so maybe the bronze you are looking for was the regular edition. The name of the painting it is based on is called Gala Contemplating The Mediterranean Sea Which At Twenty Meters Becomes The Portrait Of Abraham Lincoln (Homage To Rothko). It was painted in 1976 and is an oil on canvas (99 1/4 x 75 1/2") and is in a private collection. Dali produced this painting by starting with a digital interpretation of Lincoln's face, obtained from the American cybernetician Leon D. Harmon.

Question from Taniguchi Seiju from Japan: "Hello, my name is Taniguchi Seiju working in a software company in Japan...But unfortunately, I couldn't find the drawing that its title was I thought 'window'.....There was a lady leaning on the window looking outside. You can see the curtains waving. It would be more that happy to see the picture that I mentioned above on your homepage. If there are sites that I can see it, I'd like to know. Best Regards."
Omega: The painting is Figure At A Window (Figura En Une Finestra) from 1925. It ia an oil on canvas and measures 40 1/2 x 29 1/2". You can find the painting in the Museo Espanol De Arte Contemporaneo in Madrid, Spain. This painting was number 3 in Dali's first exhibition at the Dalmau Galery in Barcelona. It is also known as Girl At The Window (Muchacha A La Ventana) and depicts his sister Ana Maria in the family home at Cadaques, with the bay seen through the window. It is signed and dated at the lower right. I have not come across a scan of this painting but when I get one I will post it on this web page.
Update: I would like to thank Chip from ??? for letting me know where I could get the scan for Figure At A Window

Question from Vicki Novak from ???: "My husband has heard of an article or photographs about Salvador Dali that appeared in Time magazine in 1948 or 1949. He thinks it was called "Atomic Dali". Do you know the correct name of the article, the issue date and the page number of the article?"
Omega: I have not heard of an article in Time but in 1948 in Life a series of photographs called Cosmic Dali and taken by photographer Philippe Halsman and inspired by the Dali painting Leda Atomic appeared for the first time. I am not sure of the issue. These photographs represent a period in Dali's painting style which was caused by the dropping of the atomic bomb by the U.S.A. on Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 and it was a great shock to Salvador Dali. This event launched his period of nuclear or atomic inspiration. This new technique he called "Nuclear Painting" and "Atomic Painting. Some examples are Atomica Melancholia (1945) and Apotheosis Of Homer (1945) and one of his masterpieces in this innovative style was Leda Atomica which was finished in 1949 and the basis for the Cosmic Dali photographs.

I'm told that Dali designed a sofa in the 1970s that was shaped like lips and called "Mae West's Lips." Do you have any information on this, such as when it was done and where (which museum) it is in now? Thank you... Question from Nancy Ruhling.
Hello Nancy. He did create a sofa shaped like lips called Mae West Lips Sofa but it was in 1936. The sofa is covered with "shocking pink" satin and measures 33 7/8 x 75 5/8 x 31 1/2". It is in a private collection. In 1934-35 he created a Gouache on newspaper called Face Of Mae West Which May Be Used As An Apartment which depicts an apartment that forms her face and her lips are a sofa. It measures 12 3/16 x 6 11/16" and is in the Art Intitute in Chicago. Also in Figueras, Spain there is a Mae West Room in the Teatro-Museo Dali. This room was designed by the Catlan architect-decorator Oscar Tusquest under the direction of Salvador Dali and there is a sofa in the shape of lips in it, but not the original Dali sofa. I hope this answers your question... :-)Omega(-:

Do you know if there is any source which may have Dali prints of: 1. The Sacrament of the Last Supper; 2. The Christ of St. John of the Cross; 3. Corpus Hypercubicus? Any help would be greatly appreciated... Question from Ted Beck from Herndon, Virginia, U.S.A.
Hello Ted. You can try an art gallery near you or the next time you go to Florida, stop at the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg and they might have them as they do sell prints. The Museum in St. Petersburg also has a mail order catalogue that you can try to get. The only other suggestion is to contact the actual gallery that the painting is in and they may sell prints:1. The Last Supper is in the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. and I have been there and they do sell prints of Dali paintings and in case you haven't been there and are going there since it is nearby, the painting was hanging above the entrance in their bookstore. It is a beautiful master piece. - 2. The Christ Of St. John Of The Cross is in the Glasgow Art Gallery in Glasgow Scotland. - 3. Corpus Hypercubicus is in The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and I have been there and they do sell prints of Dali paintings. I hope I have been of some help... :-)Omega(-:

"El problema de fingirse genio es que a largo plazo se es uno" (Dali). "The problem of pretending to be a genius is that in the end you become one" Salvador was a great-great artist and madman. Yesterday (January 23, 1997) was his death anniversary, seven years, but he is still alive in his paintings, his statements, his art, his life...I was in Rome when he died, and even thou I had known his work for a little time, I felt deeply moved with his agony and death. If there is a genius in fooling people around, well, that's him. ...Comments by Raff from the Republic Of Panama.

"Good morning. A good friend traveled to Spain & returned with an oil Dali reproduction - quite good. She bought it because she thought I resembled the girl painted & actually I do. I liked it very much and was surprised that it was a Dali, knowing about his art only vaguely and thinking that all he did was surrealism - melting clocks & etc.. Anyway, five years ago she died of cancer and two months ago the house containing the picture burned to the ground. No, my life is not one big loss, but since she died I can't ask her where she got the painting in order to attempt to reacquire one. I phoned the Dali museum in Figueras and they said that they didn't understand which painting I wanted, but anyway, they didn't sell reproductions at their store and certainly didn't send anything overseas - would not even discuss shipping prepayment etc.. I don't speak Spanish (uno, dos, Ola! - is about it) and their english was limited. I tried the Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid and they didn't speak any english at all - laughed at me loudly and hung up. I know she bought the picture in Spain, but now think that it must have been an independent painter on the street or in a gallery. I went to one of your favorite web sites - the IsabelDeco Gallery - hoping to see my picture there, but Dali isn't even a listed artist. I have also called the Dali Musuem in Florida - no they don't have it. Called Met's store in New York - no they don't have it, but I could check with some companies... Called them and they offered other Dali paintings, but not the one I want. So, if you could be of assistance, that would be great. The picture is the "Seated girl seen from the back" painted in 1925 of his sister, an oil on canvas 42 1/2 by 30 1/4."
"I would like to contact the Museo Espanol De Arts Contemporaneo in Madrid again, and ask if their store carries such a thing. I believe it possible that my friend purchased the painting there. Maybe not, but I would like to ask them anyway. Can you recommend how I could manage that since I do not speak the language, have no Spanish speaking friends? ...Do you happen to know the museum's address? Thanks again." ...Request from Anne from Saco, Maine, U.S.A... I am sorry to say that I have not been of much help to Anne in her search for the reproduction which is somtimes called "Seated Girl Seen From The Back" but it is usually called "Girl From The Back (Noia D'esquena)" or "Girl From The Back (Muchacha De Espaldas). It is at the Museo Espanol De Arts Contemporaneo in Madrid. If anyone out there can help Anne in her search, please Email her. Especially if anyone in Madrid can check out the museums for her and let her know the results and show her that most Spaniards are friendly and helpful... :-)Omega(-:
Followup from Anne from Saco, Maine, U.S.A.: "Hello Omega, I hope you're having a good year. I am Anne Hills from Saco, Maine - remember me? I wrote to you about my friend that died and the Dali painting - seated girl seen from the back. I wrote to you over a year ago, and am surprised that my letter is still posted on your site. Occassionally, I get email from the posting, and because of that, I would like to ask that you either remove or update it. I have learned a few things since my letter to you, some from email in response to it. There are two completely different paintings called "girl ... from the back" so it is important to say that the one I want is in fact titled "Muchacha de Espaldas" not "Noia D'esquena," which is another painting entirely. The original "Muchacha de Espaldas" (oil 104cm x 74cm) resides at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid, Spain - not the Museo Espanol De Arts Contemporaneo. Finally, although I said so in my original letter, it is apparently not stressed enough, that I am searching for an oil reproduction, not a print. In the year that the posting has been up, I've gotten maybe twelve or fifteen responses. One man asked if I might want to commission the painting from his friend, a professional artist. Although I had wanted to find the work already completed, commissioning it may be my only option. In this case, however, it's difficult because the artist and friend are in South Africa and I'm in the U.S.A. Thanks for your time."

E-Mail me your comments and opinions on Salvador Dali. Then watch for your comments and opinions to appear on this page in future updates. Let me know where you are E-Mailing from. Looking forward to hearing from you... :-)Omega(-:
