Cumberland Street, Toronto.
This mixed-use building in a prominent downtown location includes two rental
retail spaces accessible from street level, two office spaces at the second
level, and a private two storey residence occupying the top two floors. This
arrangement enables the building to present a familiar and traditional front
to the street, permitting the viewer to focus on the curving free-form glass
display booths. Entrance stairs to the second floor offices and to the residence
are located at the edge of the building, to maximize the retail exposure at
the street.
The focus of the residence is a central double storey high space which is naturally
lit by bands of continuous skylights. A delicate curved steel stair leads from
this space to a bridge which traverses the room, leading to a generous roof
deck overlooking the street. Principal materials used throughout the project
are stucco, standard structural steel components, perforated metal panels, galvanized
metal grating, tempered glass panels, glass block, and granite.
