Design Philosophy
or how to be modern, yet return to historical sources
The work of the firm is characterized by the care taken in the design of its buildings. A thoughtful yet fresh approach has resulted in timeless design solutions to buildings that are already considered modern classics, and they seem to get better as they get older. The medium through which we achieve expression and form is still closely linked to function and usability. This approach does not preclude the idea of sustainability through the use of recycled materials, energy conservation and the use of materials that do not off-gas.
The approach is rooted in the belief that good buildings grow out of a clear understanding of the requirements, concerns and aspirations and health of its occupants and owners. Asking the right questions and listening carefully are an integral part of the design process.
The design solution is tempered by an understanding of standard materials and methods of construction used in unique yet rational ways. Careful detailing contributes to the distinct identity and durability of a building.
However, no building is an island unto itself. The firm's designs are layered with meaning taken not from personal taste or historical detail but from a clear understanding of the light, climate, topography of the site, from the mass and structure of the building. Our role is to improve our changing world with memorable visual and spatial experiences. Respect for and enhancement of the existing context as well form a critical part of the design process. An effort is made to create buildings of dignity which fit well amongst their neighbours and reinforce an ‘urban' landscape.
We feel our approach is well suited to the design of all building types. It squeezes the most out of physical and financial constraints. It ensures building that is pleasant to be in and to behold. It results in distinctive building of lasting quality.
