"Randonneuring" comes from the French word to walk or amble. On a randonneur event, called a "brevets", riders follow a set route with a set time limit and and must pass through checkpoints (called controls) within set times. Brevets are not races, and all riders who complete the ride with the time limit have that ride recognised. Clubs throughout the world organise brevets, and many riders go on to participate in particularly challenging events, such as Paris-Brest-Paris or Boston-Montreal-Boston, that cover 1200km within a 90 hour period.
