GRAY JAY PILGRIMAGES Mike and Yvonne have made a point of reacquainting themselves with the "Whiskey Jacks" of Vancouver by visiting their habitats on a regular basis.
This bird is only one of a multitude of species that Mike has identified and studied however I think it remains his "old friend". He has also contributed to the Clark's Nutcracker section of this website.
January, 2007 MOUNT HOLLYBURN SUMMIT VISIT
In late January of 2007 Mike and Yvonne made their annual pilgrimage to the mountains to visit the Gray Jays. The Jays were photographed at the 1,325 m. peak of Mount Hollyburn. The twin peaks over to the right are the locally famous "Lions"
Spectacular scenery!

December 31, 2007 MOUNT CYPRESS On the eve of the new year, Mike and Yvonne snowshoed up Cypress, though stopping short of Hollyburn peak because BC Parks had rated the avalanche danger as high. These photos were taken at the highest limits of the cross country area. The jays' feathers are certainly "fluffed up" to keep warm!

February, 2008 MOUNT HOLLYBURN VISIT This year Mike and Yvonne did not venture to the summit although the weather was ideal. It must be concluded that the Gray Jays they met were of a different territory than those met during the January, 2007 trip.
According to Mike:
"The jay would pick up about 10 seeds before flying away, presumably storing them in its mouth for later caching".Again, magnificent scenery!
