25 YEARS AND GOING STRONG!!
SOME FACTS ABOUT THE BAND:
The York Lions Club, in April 1972, organized and sponsored a new band for youth called the York Lions Steel Band. Five volunteer members of the Club are responsible for its management. The Band raises its own funds (is self-supporting) and no costs are charged to join, travel or learn musical skills -- thus making it accessible to all children.
The York Lions Steel Band is made up of approximately 30 teenagers who perform on various sizes of 45-gallon oil drums and is considered to be one of the best steel bands north of the Caribbean. It has the distinct pleasure of carrying the City of York flag wherever it travels and is proud to be called "The Official Youth Band of the City of York".
The Band's goals are to provide members with a year-round activity which, in addition to being great fun, teaches responsibility, commitment and teamwork. The members will be taught musical skills, leadership and performing skills. Educational trips, combined with musical performances will be a top priority.
Some memorable performances have been: Disneyworld (1986/1993), Busch Gardens (1989), Brisbane, Australia International Lions Convention (1991), Edmonton Klondike Days (1992), Opryland USA (1994), Hershey Theme Park (1995).
Musical arrangements and instructions are provided by Jerry Jerome of Jerry Jerome and The Cardells and Linda Stacey-Fenech. Jerry also makes the drums and tunes them as well. Practices are on Thursday evenings from 7:00 - 9:00 PM and on Sunday afternoons (during the winter months only) from 1:00 - 3:00PM at Harwood Hall in the City of York. Three recordings have been made to date.
