About AY

Top-Quality Services

Alan Yoshioka (AY) would love to help you get your message across. His dedication, tact, insight, and keen eye for detail enhance every project he tackles, whether as an editor, proofreader, writer, or indexer.

Subjects

Alan devotes much of his working time to medical science, though he welcomes projects in many other fields, including religion, law, history, and music. Before starting AY’s Edit, he spent four years writing and editing scientific reports at a major pharmaceutical company, where he earned recognition for producing top-quality output within tight timelines.

Professional Development

A member of the Editors’ Association of Canada (EAC) since 1999, Alan organized more than sixty seminars during his two years as professional development co-chair for the association’s Toronto branch. He is in his fifth year on the EAC Toronto branch executive and now serves as branch chair. At the national level of the association, he has performed several key tasks, including the very successful redevelopment of the Online Directory of Editors.

Alan is a professional member of The Word Guild, for which he has judged two annual contests for new non-fiction authors.

He belongs to the Indexing Society of Canada (ISC) as well as special interest groups for scientific indexing and historical indexing and a group for peer review of indexes.

Formal Education

Alan has a strong and interdisciplinary academic background, with a mathematics degree from the University of Waterloo, a master’s in environmental studies from York University, and a PhD in history of science, technology, and medicine from Imperial College (UK).

Hobbies

In his spare time Alan sings, swims, and rides his bike. In recent years he has taken up blogging and digital photography. From time to time he indulges his penchant for writing songs, light verse, and anagrams. He hopes someday to turn his PhD thesis into Streptomycin: The Musical.
