Online Help has come a long way during the past 4 or 5 years, and it's time for me to move along with it. The old v2.x STE was looking a little worn, and I've decided to spruce it up --- so I gave it a major overhaul, starting with version 3.0. It's not just a new look, but a new format:

I rewrote the STE in the HTML Help format, which will run under Windows 95/98/2000/ME/NT/XP. If you have an early version of Windows 95, I'll also post the required support files which will enable you to run it.

While v3.x will work on a 640x480 screen, it looks better at 800x600 and better still at 1024x768. It will look lousy in 16 colours, not too bad in 256, and really nice in 16-bit colour (or higher). The HTML Help format offers many advantages over the standard WinHelp format, and I'm sure that you will be pleased with the increased ease-of-use, organisation, and functionality. This version contains more graphics, clip art and photos, to make it look a little more professional. Future versions will have even more graphics and photos.

Versions 3.0 and up take advantage of some of the nifty HTML Help features. Not all of these items will be present just yet, but this is what's possible in future versions, when I have more time to work on the details:

Before you can run this program, you need to register an OCX file, called POPUP.OCX (included in the zip file). This allows you to view the many popups in this new version. This needs to be done only once. (If you've already downloaded version 3.0, then you can skip this section). Here's how you register the OCX:

STEP ONE: If you are using Windows 95/98/2000, copy POPUP.OCX to your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory. If you are using Windows NT, then copy POPUP.OCX to your C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32 directory

STEP TWO: Click on the Start button on your toolbar (which, unless you've moved it, is at the bottom left corner of the screen). Select "Run..." from the popup menu.

STEP THREE: In the "Open" text box, type "REGSVR32 POPUP.OCX" (without the quotes). Click on the OK button.

Version 3.8 is a compressed HTML file called STE-v39.chm. It is about 6.6 megs in size, and contains all of content of the Star Trek Explorer. It will work with Windows (95/98/2000/NT/XP).

POPUP.OCX is an ActiveX control which is used to view the popups. The STE Help file will work without it, but clicking on the popup links will generate an error. This control needs to be installed only once (see the instructions above).
