SPRING 03: NEW OUTLOOK MAGAZINE
Excerpt from the article Easy does it (p. 13) by Maureen LittlejohnThe name Penguin came to [John Bingham] when he glimpsed his reflection on one of his early wogs.
What kept him going? "Nothing was as powerful as crossing the finish line of my first race," says Bingham.
Those words ring true for thousands of Penguins worldwide, whether they live in Germany, Australia or Bosnia. Toronto, Ont., has the most organized club. Led by Glenn Gabriel, 29, the 60 members get out for three 6-10K runs a week, and also bike and swim together.
"The social aspect is one of the best selling points. You run with other people at your own pace and have fun while you get fit," says Gabriel, stressing that Penguins can range from 30 to 75 years old.
SPRING 03: torontObserver ONLINE MAGAZINE (CENTENNIAL COLLEGE)
Excerpt from the article Get in shape this spring by running by Andrea CivichinoThe Penguins, a group of 40 men and women of all running stages, meet regularly for runs. There is no cost to join the Penguins and usually after runs the group meets for lunch or dinner.
"Running should be fun so we focus on both the running and social aspects," Gabriel said.
"The leaders of the group take it upon themselves to ensure that nobody gets left behind during the runs, even if it means running with them," Gabriel said.

The Toronto Penguins Web site was created using Netscape® Communicator 4.72 (Composer) on a PC. Photos and thumbnails were created with Adobe® Photoshop® 5.0. The main fonts on this site are Arial for the headings and Times New Roman for the body text. Since I was new to Web site design and creation, I relied extensively on The Non-Designer’s Web Book (2nd ed) by Robin Williams and John Tollett.
Webmaster’s Note by Glenn Gabriel This Web site would not exist without the help and support of many people. The book that started me on my running journey was Making the Marathon Your Event by Richard Benyo. I continue to find inspiration in my running hero, Terry Fox, a 22-year-old amputee who ran across Canada in 1980 to raise funds for cancer research. For details, read Terry Fox: His Story by Leslie Scrivener. Thanks to my friends, family and the Penguin Brigade. And thanks to God for the courage, strength and wisdom I need to fulfill my mission.
Godspeed!
