"The saddest thing is if at the end of your life you say 'I wish I did' or 'Why didn't I?' You have to go after it with full gusto in life, whatever it is, go after the stupidest whim, because you pass by once." - Gene Simmons

MISCELLANEOUS:

"Hi, My name is Maria Manuela Pinheiro Gomes George I was born in Cedros, Faial, Acores. I moved to the United States because of the volcano. I did go back to visit in 1969. My parents went back in 1985 and it had changed alot. I currently live in the Midwest, but I would like to visit my island again. My children want to go see where their roots come from. I still have family in Cedros. With that recent earthquake none of my family got hurt and some of their homes had minor damages..." - Comments by Maria from U.S.A.
"I would like to know a little bit about the diving in Faial. What can you see there? Is it expensive to dive? How expensive is it to live on a hotel and to eat a dinner? Is Faial the best island to dive from in the Azorean?" - Question from Liselotte from Sweden ... The Faial waters are extremely clear, with visibility up to 30 meters. The ocean temperatures varies between 19 and 22 C. There is an abundunce of sea life from colourful fauna to whales. Dives for a group of 4 persons goes for about 28 Euros for 1 Dive, Boat, Gasolene, Skipper with Tanks, Weights, Belt. I could not get any accomadation prices but they would be quite reasonable at the larger hotels and even better at the smaller ones. As for dinner, I found it very very affordable and with Sweden's economy being similiar to Canada's, high taxed therefore high priced, you should find it quite cheap.
"My name is Carlos and I want to know history of Rebeira Funda Cedros" - Question from Carlos from ??? ... I could not find anything on Rebeira Funda. I could only find some information about its general area called Cedros. Its territory makes up a large slice of the Island and extends itself from Salao to Praia do Norte which was Faial's grain growing area at one time. According to the Santa Rita Report it had 3000 inhabitants before the first major emigration movement in 1867. Only the population of the main village in Horta was larger. Cedros was settled by the Flemish at the beginning of the second half of the 15th century. If anyone out there has any information on Rebeira Funda to help out Carlos let me know.
"...my name is Melanie and i am a student at boston university. my parents are from Faial, and i haven't been back to visit since 1991. I really miss Horta and the marina, that was my favorite place. Also, you should get some old photos of the lighthouse at Capelinhos all covered in ash from the errupting volcano. It lets people really see nature at work..." - Comments by Melanie from Boston, Massachusetts, U.S.A.

GRAPHICS & INFORMATION:

Horta, on the island of Faial, on the route of the yachts. At the beginning you could count them on the fingers of your hand and their arrival was an event. Now there are hundreds of yachts that make Horta their compulsory port of call for crossing the Atlantic.
Horta is the ideal starting point for a dream cruise round the archipelago. The white houses of the town mirrored on the sea. Faial is in the shape of an irregular pentagon with an area of 173.42 Km2. The island has a length of 21 Km and a maximum width of 14 Km.
At left from Monte da Guia, the little peak 145 meters high overlooking Horta, Faial. Faial was called Ventura on old charts and Sao Luiz at the time of its discovery by Portuguese navigators. Its first inhabitant, according to legend, was a hermit who sought refuge from the world there.
At left the harbour in Horta while the sun rises behind Pico. History: Josse van Huerter, a wealthy Fleming, accompanied by fifteen fellow-countrymen, landed on Faial, which was already inhabited by settlers from Portugal. The story has it that my last name Goulart is derived from these flemish settlers.
At left from Monte da Guia, you get an excellent view of Horta from the summit or the upper slopes, and of Porto Pim, the old harbour and the fortiped gate. History: Josse van Huerter was searching for the tin and silver lodes that were said to exist in the island. The first prospection work proved that a mistake had been made and caused the failure of the expedition. Van Huerter excited by the lushness and beauty of the island was not discouraged by the failure of this first expedition.
Faial is often called the "Blue Island" because of the abundance of hydrangeas growing there. History: Through the intercession of the Duchess of Burgundy, a daughter of King Joao I of Portugal, Van Huerter obtained a letter patent in 1468, naming him donee of the island and giving him the right to bring more settlers from Flanders, scourged by the Hundred Years' War. The Flemings settled in the parish that is now called Flamengos, the very name of which recalls their origin, and later in the Horta area.
Spend pleasant days in good company, appreciating the vast clear horizons shaded by greenery and masses of flowers. History: The island in the beginning prospered due to agriculture and the export of the dye-yielding plant called woad. In 1583, as part of the occupation of the Acores which began with the landing on Terceira island, a Spanish fleet sailed to Faial. A body of armed men landed at Pasteleiro and engaged the defenders, who were reinforced by French troops. The Spaniards finally overcame the resistance and conquered the island.
At left is a hugh volcanic grotto, caldeira, in Faial. Dominated by the volcanic cone of Caldeira, which has gentle slopes interrupted by secondary volcanic formations, the island has its highest point at Cabeço Gordo, with an altitude of 1,043 metres. History: After the Spanish invasion there followed attacks by English privateers, which caused large-scale damage, and much later Faial was hit by a destructive earthquake in 1672.
