CONCERT REVIEWS:

"The concert on February 24, 1997 in Hamilton was great. It was nice to see them on stage with a full arena show as the last time I saw them it was in a small venue without any of the huge stage effects they had on this trip through the Toronto area. On that previous show you concentrated solely on the music as there was none of the arena stage show distractions but this show was a pleasent change. They came out with the lights still up and walked along the crowd shaking hands and mingled with their roadies. They picked up their instruments one at a time and joked around for awhile until after about 15 minutes the lights went down and the stage lights went up and you realized that they were out to start their show and not just joking around while the sound check was in progress. They had two stages. One was in the shape of a guitar body and the other was circular like a cymbal and they all went back and forth. Microphones were placed all over the stage and floor between the stages so they was always one nearby for vocal segments. Their was a drum kit on both stages. The encore has a weird twist which I will not describe to leave it as a surprise for any reader who plans on seeing the tour. In all the concert was fantastic and the crowd seemed to agree and I highly recommend everyone see it went it pulls into your town. I look forward to seeing them again when they pass through next." - Review by :-)Omega(-: from Toronto, Canada

LOAD CD REVIEWS:

"** out of 5 - Well, it's been 5 years and Metallica has finally released their 6th effort. And if this is any indication of what is to come after, their going to have to take the metal out of Metallica. Definitely one of the most commercial albums from any of the old school trash/metal bands. Although some tracks still in part weakly maintain some of the traditional Metallicaism, such as Ain't My Bitch and Thorn Within, however would still make an early follower cry if played along side the mastery's of Kill & Ride. Metallica must have had their balls cut off along with their hair, for on this album no aggression, intensity or the all around adrenalin pumping, skull bending drive can be expected. Some of the most disappointing (please play me on the radio) tunes (Until It Sleeps & Hero For A Day) can be taken in a moment of weakness along side a few six packs and mild sedative, but for the most part your CD laser will rarely cross these atrocities. The most disturbing 5 minutes on the disk is the country lick of Mama Said (what the f*ck where you guys thinking...guest appearance on Rita & Friends), pathetic for band which were once considered metal gods. But if I must be critically honest, in a review of the music alone, discarding the band and it's history, compliments can be found in more than a few fractions of selected songs. Many segments of Load throughout resemble their previous work on the (beginning of the end) black album. King Nothing & The House That Jack Built continues the saga of the slower softer groove style guitars, and James has continued to exchange his legendary growling, hateful shouts for the new sensitive out pourings of emotional song. And let's not overlook that Lars has lost his agility and speed with his increasingly less impressive drumming as their growth(?) continues. Along with that practice Metallica has added many new elements including the country mentioned above, and what I find to be the most interesting concoctions are the alternative experiments (ex. Poor Twisted Me). But Metallica is definitely weakening, and if they continue to explore a multitude of variations, in my opinion, they will spread themselves to thin and eventually evaporate. In conclusion they have birthed a new pretty good ROCK album, and if it wasn't released by these boys who pounded out so much brilliance and originality into my brain years ago it would have received a higher praise. But the bottom line is this is a f*ck*n sh*tty Metallica album considering that we know what their capable of.." - Review by Jason Savoy (with them since the beginning) from Winnipeg, Canada

"I agree with Jason above that this is a pretty good rock album. This recording shows them progressing musically. The first few tracks are similiar to their previous recordings in style and the later few tracks show us their progression. One of the things that I know Jason would also agree on is that Metallica gives you value for your money by filling the entire CD full of good rock music instead of the normal 45 minutes of 8 to 10 tracks. The tracks on this CD are: Ain't My Bitch, 2 X 4, The House Jack Built, Until It Sleeps, King Nothing, Hero Of The Day, Bleeding Me, Cure, Poor Twisted Me, Wasting My Hate, Mama Said, Thorn Within, Ronnie and The Outlaw Torn." - Review by :-)Omega(-: from Toronto, Canada

"...About this thing with the "new" metallica?? i think that they are still great.. many people have trouble with change a lot.. i guess it's cause they like HEAVY F**KING metal huh?? i play guitar and deep purple and metallica are right up there on my favorite bands list.. i believe that the new album is great.. not one of their best (i do agree because they have released such awesome ones as justice and the black album) but it is good.. they said themselves.. that they wanted a change so they have become hard rock for this album at least.. however, they still play their old stuff at concerts and they enjoy it.. i really think that metallica doesnt give a sh*t about what the people think about their music.. they still have their huge crouds at concerts so metallica is still the awesome band that they were.." - Review by The Shaving Yak from ???

"As the years, and the albums pass by, it becomes more and more clear that the something that we called Metallica was Cliff. Metallica died in a car accident. I have nothing against it, that the four guys continue playing. Just, don't call it Metallica anymore." - Review by Tvrttko Cavar from ???

Lars Ulrich on how Seattle was chosen for Live Shit: Binge & Purge: "We got The Plant in July, and when we started picking tracks, we started picking through the San Diego and Mexico City stuff we had. Then we were going to look at the Seattle stuff from four years ago and pick the 3 or 4 songs from that show which we didn't do on this tour, 'The Thing That Should Not Be,' the full version of 'Master Of Puppets', '...And Justice For All' and 'Breadfan,' none of which were a regular part of the '...Roam' tour. We were hesitant about approaching the Seattle stuff, thinking that it wouldn't sound so good or that we weren't playing so well, but it had a really cool feeling, there was a really good vibe with those gigs. So the more we listened to it the more we thought, 'Why not just fuckin' clean house and put this whole gig out too, to show the different sides of what we've been doing.' So we decided to go for that contrast, showing the '...Justice' tour where the band were physically a lot closer together onstage, and what we did we did in '...Roam' which was more of a 'reaching out' and involving people in the arena thing. Both of them hold up really well in their own way, and together they become even more. So basically, here is 9 hours of live Metallica sh*t. I remember having the conversation with Cliff (Burnstein) where we said, 'Let's just fucking do this and go totally over the top.' It's pushing things further than we've ever pushed anything and, as far as we can tell, further than anybody else ever has."

Lars Ulrich on how the idea for Live Shit: Binge & Purge came about: "We asked Wayne lsham to come down and shoot those two San Diego shows at the beginning of the ...Roam tour. He brought the whole 10-camera deal down and basically documented the two nights. It was similar to what we'd done with two Seattle shows on the ...Justice tour. So the plan was to have a visual document of this tour and then throw in a few bonus tracks from those Seattle shows, maybe find the best 3 or so. Then the tour goes on and Mensch (Peter Mensch who, along with Cliff Burnstein, manages Metallica) starts calling to tell us we have to start picking tracks from the San Diego stuff, so they can start editing this video package which was gonna come out toward the end of the tour. We could've started listening to it immediately, but we didn't want to dilute our focus on tour. We were playing the stuff every night and we didn't want to spend more time listening to it on the road."

Lars Ulrich on how Mexico City was chosen for Live Shit: Binge & Purge: "We were sitting there, at that stage, facing the fact that we had 5 nights in Mexico City. One of the things you look for when you wanna put shit on tape, whether that be audio or video, is for as many nights as possible in the same place so as you don't have to fuck with mikes and set-ups and so on. We also wanted a city where we felt we'd get some good feedback from the audience, where we'd hopefully get lifted to another level of performance. And everything we'd heard about the whole vibe of Mexico City, the craziness and so on, made it a good choice. So then the idea came to record Mexico City just on audio, so there was one gig on CD and the San Diego stuff on video."

So we decided to document some more stuff because we were playing much better. Which is where the idea came from for a package that had one gig on video and a different gig on CD but both from the same tour."
