News from
Manny Charlton:
"...DROOL is the Title of my first solo album and is available from RED STEEL RECORDS in the UK..." Manny Charlton
I would like to thank Manny for sending me a copy of Drool. After his long absence I was pleasently surprised with what I heard. I really liked it very much. It sounded new and fresh and I would have bought it even if I did not know Manny was the talent behind it. His guitar work has, like a fine wine, improved with age. Each song stands on its own and sounds unique which also is probably due to the great lineup of musicians he has gathered. I hope Manny gets out off the ranch in Texas and tours for Drool, so we can once again watch the Scots hombre strut his stuff on stage.

SAD
NEWS:
I would like to thank Christopher Thelen from "The Daily Vault" for informing and sending me the official press release on the sudden death of Darrell Sweet a few days ago. The following is the official press release
"Darrell Sweet, 51, drummer of the Scottish rock group Nazareth, suffered a fatal heart attack on April 30th, 1999 as the band was embarking on the second leg of a US tour. The band had arrived at the Amphitheater in New Albany Indiana, when Sweet began feeling ill and within minutes went into cardiac arrest. He was rushed to the New Albany Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
"Sweet was a founding member of Nazareth, a band whose career has spanned 30 years. In the 1970's, they hit big in the States with "Love Hurts" and "This Flight Tonight" and with albums like "Hair Of The Dog," "Razamanaz" and, "Expect No Mercy".
"The band continued to tour worldwide through the 90's; their latest album "Boogaloo" was released in North America in January of this year by CMC International Records.
"Mr. Sweet is survived by his wife, Marion, his son Michael and his daughter, Maxine. Funeral arrangements have not been finalized."

CONCERT    REVIEWS:

"I can`t tell you how many times i`ve seen Nazareth, but each time it gets better. I was working for a band called The Godz july 15th 1995 in Cory Pa. They opened for Nazareth, I got to meet them after the show and it was great, they even autographed my Hair of The Dog cd. Gotta love Great Guys" - Review by Ed from Ohio, U.S.A.

"The band played 16 songs with numerous standouts. February 28 playlist- Java blues, Big Boy, My White Bicycle, Razamanaz, This Flight Tonight, Whiskey Drinkin Women, Love Hurts, Beggars Day, Hair of the Dog, Holiday, Dream On, Hearts Grown Cold, Light Comes Down, Talk Talk, Nothings So Good, God Save The South. Excellent Versions of Whiskey Drinkin Women which consisted of a very fine guitar solo from Jimmy Murrison and My White Bicycle Which had Ronnie Leahy showing off his keyboard talents. This lineup rocks. I recommend that if the band plays in your town go see them, you will get your moneys worth." - Review by Bob Moore from Parma, Ohio, U.S.A.

"finally getting to go to one of their shows after 15 yrs. of waiting. will e-mail with details on concert." - Review by TBreed5830 from ???

"Heeeyyy!!! This is my first time visiting this site... I'm a big fan of Nazareth's and this year had the opportunity of a life time!! :o) Through a very close friend of mine I was able to get backstage passes while they were here in Edmonton, Alberta on March 10, 1999! Dan McCafferty, Pete Agnew and Darryl Sweet were incredibly funny, wild, crazy and sooo down to earth!!;o) Their show here in Edmonton was at a place called "Cowboy's" if you can imagine that...but it was fantastic and the guys still know how to "Rock the house" after all these years!! Cheers to the guys, that "nutty" Daaarrlin bus driver, Rick Walls and roadies Rob and Willy!! Keeepp Rockin!! :o)" - Review by Wendy from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

"No doubt Naz is one of my favorite bands. I saw em live in Columbus, Ohio in '86 or '87 (???) Besides the style of their music and the distinctive vocals, their live music is EXCELLENT. That's something not a lot of bands can say for various reasons, not the least of which is the fact that most overdrive their equipment horribly. I say this with some authority as I've seen over 75 top name bands perform since my first show in 1973." - Review by Scott Corrigan from Pataskala, Ohio, U.S.A.

"Saw Nazareth this past summer in South Dakota, opening for George Thorogood. Talk about backwards!!! Naz was excellent. Thorogood? Don't know - I was in a hotel bar having a few pints with Nazereth!! It was a dream come true. I'm a radio DJ in Sioux Falls, and saw the comments about the "classic rock" radio station in FLA, and couldn't agree more!! The state of rock radio in America is embarassing, and disgusting. I caught hell for playing "Carry Out Feelings" the day of the show!! It was worth it though, because of the feedback I got from the listeners. One of my personal faves is "Every Time It Rains", from "No Jive", the CD booklet I had autographed in the bar that night. Pete Agnew bumped my beer, and some spilled on the booklet accidentally. At first I was kinda bummed, but now I realize - it makes it even cooler!! By the way, the new one is "Light Comes Down" from "Boogaloo", it rocks, and I'm catching hell, again." - Review by John from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, U.S.A.

"I just saw Nazareth after this past labor day.they are awesome. It was even more excitng knowing they were staying in the hotel next to work. if anyone has a direct e-mail address to them that would be great or even an address." - Review by Melissa from Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A.
Omega - You can send them mail care of their record company.

"Hi there...Just saw Nazareth Last night (Nov 12) in a little Club (Malibu Jacks) that holds about 400 People. I don't think they were "suppose" to play there (not listed in any tour dates) but it kicked ass..it was my first time i have seen them live and to be honest i never new they were so "Big" i have only owned and heard the Greatest Hitz CD so i heard alot of song i never heard before and Loved them! This is why i'm out checking out Naz pages. They played the regular set starting out with Raz-a-ma-Daz finishing up with Cocaine (encore). They seemed to have alot of energy after playing so many dates so far and put on a great show. A big generation gap as well, people from 19 to 60+ all rocking out it was great...Well anyway's just wanted to give you my thoughts on the show, My ears are still ringing. Take Care" - Review by Dave Milford from St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada

"saw naz in south texas this summer and they still kick butt after all these years! i'm wonderin if anyone knows of any kareoke tracks of naz...i could do a mean cover of carry out feelings or this flight tonight.." - Review by Tom from Texas, U.S.A.

"Hey, great to see a page devoted to my favorite band growing up in the 70's!!! (as you can see from my handle) That and it's great to see that there's so many other Nazareth fans hitting your page worldwide. Saw the band twice in the late 70's at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, best shows I've seen, they really kicked ass! 5 rows from the stage, catching the sweat off their brows, unfortunately I've missed any of their later shows but hope to see them in the future, got to relive my childhood...hope to read more from other Naz freaks." - Review by G. Watson from Toronto, Ontario, Canada

"...Well, the Nazareth band was here twice, first time on the December 14th, 1990, at the place called Palace de Cristais, where they played in a closed place to more than 7,000 crazy people. Those people don't believed when those guys came to stage and started to play. Was the biggest crazy Curitiba's night. They played seventeen tracks. I think that went the Snakes 'n' Ladders Tour. I have many photos and a cassette of this show. Second time, at the place called Aeroanta on the September 16th, 1995, Aeroanta capacity of 1,000 people were overloaded with more than 2,000 people. We have many photos and a cassette of this show, too. They played fifteen tracks." - Review by Andre Sikora from Curitiba, Brazil

Anyone wanting to contact the band can do so via me cheers" - Information by Joe Geesin from East Sussex, U.K.

"...I've heard the new material (I've been w/ Darrell in the studio) and it sounds Sh*t Hot and heavy. look out for the next round of remastered Cds on Castle. All with extra tracks and sleeve notes from the band..." - Review by Joe Geesin from East Sussex, U.K.

Expect No Mercy (1977) CD Review: "...Just a tidbit on the Expect No Mercy cover: the original artwork has the full rear anatomical view of the lower gnome... but the record company (A&M) refused to print it as such -- made Naz agree to crop the art work for fear stores would not stock an "obscene" cover..." - Review by ??? from ???

No Jive (1991) CD Review: "major naz fan here, i go back to old days...i have all U.S. titles...just got "no jive" it is awsome as usual...tough to select their best album...all are great...too many to pick, when i think of them all, they are all great...anyways take it easy, hwd fats" - Review by hwd fats from ???

No Mean City CD Info: "A small tidbit of info for you, I did not see it listed, but I have been known to overlook things a time or two. Castle records in the UK has reissued on CD, most notably "No Mean City". The artwork has been faithfully restored." - Information by Ric from ???

2 X S CD Review: "I feel that 2XS is an overlooked and underrated treasure in the Nazareth collection. The entire album is good, and it really ticks me that it hasn't been released on CD! For those of you Naz fans who haven't had this pleasure, you owe it to yourself to find a good copy and give it a listen." - Review by Scott Corrigan from Pataskala, Ohio, U.S.A.

MISCELLANEOUS:

"Hello all NAZARETH and DARRELL SWEET friends: Around the world, there must be numerous great rock-fans like myself, who have been touched and moved in and by their music, lead by their drive, thrill, enthusiasm charisma and more and more... Words can never express the great loss we now have to experience since Darrell, too early in life has passed away, leaving a gap none can ever fill again. My heart goes out to Darrell's family, bandmembers, crewmembers all friends and especially founder members and eldest friends Dan and Pete. I count myself extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity to meet and to be befriended with Darrell, Dan, Pete, Manny, Billy - way back, and be friends with all since 18 years and I myself and many of my friends and family have lots of glorious memories for keeps and to thrive on. Darrell, in the cathedral of my heart a candle will be burning for you forever. Your friend silly selley" - Comments by Selley from ???.

"Darryl Sweet guests with 'Gaels Blue', Cafe Rosslyn Kirkcaldy Fife, Jan 16,1999. Earlier this week musicians friends and family came from all over the world to pay tribute to a Fife drummer who had entertained his public for over four decades. The scenes at Kirkcaldy Crematorium resembled a rock concert as Darryl Sweet (52) was laid to rest. His last show in Fife was as a guest at a friend's birthday party. On that occasion he played a complete R&B set with the reformed Gael Blue and confessed that he really had enjoyed himself. The band were thrilled also as were the small select audience who witnessed Darryl take up the drums later in the night when I, as DJ for the night, slipped Broken Down Angel on the decks and followed it up with the huge international hit, This Flight Tonight. He played live drums karaoke fashion in time with the records, beat for beat, roll for roll. A number of weeks later he was kind enough to grant an interview to me where he described his music from the early days up to his forthcoming US tour. A career that started as The Shadettes playing residences at the Burma Ballroom Kirkcaldy and the legendary Palais, Burntisland. This was 1960 and as a covers band in those pre-Beatles days meant tracking the rocks hits of day and replicating them for a dance audience. As The Shadettes they would support any touring act of the day including The Who. If this was the start of British Beat then it would be a new name; Nazareth and new songs that would break the band into a formidable live act. Broken Down Angel became a top ten single in 1973 from their third album and was quickly followed by Bad Bad Boy. Primarily established as an albums band and a live rock act, a string of albums provided us with some memorable songs like Gone Dead Train, Shanghai'd In Shanghai and Telegram. The latter, from the 1976 album Close Enough For Rock N' Roll, was surely the definitive rock road song and one that would open the show for Nazareth for twenty years. The world wide hit Love Hurts was a respected cover of the Everly Brothers song and one that Guns N'Roses leader Axl Rose wanted to hear at his wedding - sung by Dan McCafferty of course. In 1993 Guns N'Roses, then the biggest rock band on the planet, would cover the Naz song Hair Of The Dog reviving interest all over again. In recent months, still with the core members of The Shadettes, Darryl, Dan and bassist Pete Agnew wrote and recorded Boogaloo (SPV Records, SPV 085-18502), and again set off on a world tour. Completely written by the band and produced by themselves and their engineer Mike Ging, Boogaloo was already picking up airplay mainly from the rocking first track Light Comes Down. In that final interview Darryl introduced me to Talk Talk, a track begging to be released as a single and one that would suit the particular style of Rod Stewart. If this happens then it would surely be prolific. On the second leg of the Boogaloo tour in the United States Darryl Sweet felt ill just as the tour bus approached the New Albany Amphitheater in Indiana. With paramedics in attendance it was revealed that he had suffered a massive heart attack from which he would not recover. The tour was immediately cancelled and the band returned to Scotland this week." - Comments by John Murray for Fife Herald from Kirkcaldy, Scotland.

"It is sad news that Darrell has left us. Nazareth is one of the great 70's rock bands that has inspired us all, and always being down to earth, nice people (remembering a brief encounter with the band at a local pub after a concert in the late 80's) All their appearances here in Norway showed a great band that still had the fire from their heydays.! In Remembrance" - Comments by R. Nedregaard from Norway.

"Sad to hear that Darrell was dead. I wish to thank him and the rest of the band for all the records and cd's they have given us, and for the concert in Bergen in 86." - Comments by Sigmund Skjelnes from Norway.

"just kick up your pages - this legendary band has lost a gem and you are not kicking ass .. whats keeping you to express some due credits to Darrell Sweet and in this respect NAZARETH for what they have done to this world's R'n'R fans and friends and vistors to your pages." - Comments by ASelley from ???.

"Got any convenient links to Naz. tour/venue info for the next month or so? Looks like they are generally in my area during that time period (east tennessee/west n. carolina), but I've been having a hard time getting real ticket info. thanks for any help" - Comments by mjv from Tennessee, U.S.A.
Omega: As you must have heard since you sent your email, Darrell has died. While the remaining members deal with the loss of their friend the rest of the tour has been cancelled. With Darrell's death and him being the pillar that held up the band that came to be known as Nazareth, so dies Nazareth. I have always concentrated on the guitarist in a band, which in Nazareth's case was Manny, but in a band the foundation is the drummer. Without a good foundation a building crumbles but Darrell provided an excellent foundation that allowed the others to shine on stage and allowed changes to the structure to survive successfully. But now in Darrell's ashes lies Nazareth and Darrell should be where all our thoughts are concentrated and especially with his family and friends who have loved and lost someone close to them. Hopefully Nazareth may be resurrected in the future but I wish I could say the same for Darrell. Farewell Darrell and say hello to Jimi for me.

"...i have a question. could you tell me who wrote the song "Love Hurts"? thanks for your time..." - Comments by shirley from ???

"Nazareth has been my favorite band for over 20 years! I have all of their vinyl releases through "Sound Elixir" and the rest on CD...I saw the Boyz In Dallas TX on Aug 19th 1998 and they were great! I have seen them live over a dozen times and it was the best sounding Nazareth show I've ever experienced! They blew away April Wine and Blue Oyster Cult. I can hardly wait for Boogaloo to hit the record stores! Please be sure to vote them for the rock 'N' roll hall of fame. This is a legendary band that deserves to be there!! Keep Rockin," - Comments by Tony Vallorani from Flower Mound, Texas, U.S.A.

"Hi. I was checking though your Nazareth page...and I had a question for you. I Always liked the song love hurts but I beleive there was an earlier version. Do you know who wrote and released the original version of this song?? Thanks in advance..." - Comments and question by Pete from ??? - Love Hurts was written by Boudleaux Bryant and was a minor hit for the Every Brothers.

"Paul Geyev is in the Ukraine, that's where he's from. Paul and I have been communicating back and forth since you posted his message on your page. As we are both musicians and songwriters, we have been collaborating on some songs. Here we are, thousands of miles apart, never have met, and yet we're co-writing songs together. This is great! By the way, I'm from California..." - Comments by Jim Rudd from California, U.S.A.

"...I'm impatiently waiting the new CD. It's been far too long since we've had some new stuff! I hope it's like "Move Me" and includes some acoustic remakes of classic hits. I'd love to get acoustic versions of "hair of the dog", "love hurts", and "carry out feelings". We should have new remastered versions of some CDs which will include additional songs. I think Hair Of The Dog with three new songs (previously unreleased) is due out this month. I went to a CD store the other day and saw "No Jive". I couldn't believe it!..." - Comments by Jim Rudd from California, U.S.A.

"If never been "Nazareth" never been me. I love them from the beginning!!! I say: There's good groups, there's bad ones, there is Nazareth..." - Comments by Sandy from Israel

"...Never seen Razamanaz, Exercises, or their first record. All I ever see is Hair Of The Dog, and a few others, mostly compilations. Hell, I had Razamanaz stolen off of the hood of my car back in '77 in college, and I've been trying to find it in a store ever since. I guess I could order these records, but why aren't they in stores? There are tons of good albums in print that are never seen in stores, even the major ones. By all groups, not just Nazareth. But I guess that is a reflection of American FM radio: same old sh*t. There's a classic rock station in Orlando, Florida, WHTQ. I call it WSOS. 200,000 great rock tracks out there and they play the same 300 or so. Thats worse than boring, thats torture. Thank God for my personal music collection." - Comments by Moo from Orlando, Florida, U.S.A.

"Would you please inform me any people E-mail addresses I can make acquaintance of, who like Nazareth and such kind of music, and who make such music at home...Paul Geyev" - Comments by Paul Geyev from Ukraine......You can Email Paul Geyev directly - :-)Omega(-:

"BILLY RANKIN! I have several reasons why I like Billy. First, he's a tremendous songwriter. His songwriting did a lot for Naz. Second, the Naz albums with Billy are my favorites (No Jive, Move Me, 2XS in particular). Third, and perhaps most important, he just looks cool! Ha ha! ;-)" - Comments by Jim Rudd from California, U.S.A.

Nazareth first was established in Scotland as the Shadettes, changing the name in 1969 and releasing a self titled debut album in 1971. After gaining popularity in Scotland, the band decided to tackle the international market, and pulled up stakes and headed for London. The move was a wise one, as Nazareth continued to gain recognition and popularity, especially after the addition of ex-Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover as producer. Their third album, and the first one with Glover's producing, was Razamanaz, which yielded the hit singles Broken Down Angels and Bad Bad Boys. In 1973 the band had another hit with a cover of Joni Mitchell's This Flight Tonight. Nazareth didn't fully break into the American market until the following year with the peacock covered Loud And Proud album, which went to number one on UK charts.
