HIPAA stands for the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act and is a United States federal law passed in 1996 to lead the healthcare industry towards incremental reform. HIPAA’s intent is to reform the healthcare industry by improving the privacy and security of patients’ health information also known as Protected Health Information (PHI).
In Canada data privacy is governed by a similar law called the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). While the requirements of PIPEDA is less constricting than HIPAA, it is also much more expansive. PIPEDA applies broadly to any personal information (PI) related to Canadian citizens. In summary of PIPEDA, Canadians are empowered not just with whom has access to their data, but also requires explicit consent when collecting personal information.
